RNS510 - Does anybody know how to update v17 maps using Memory Card?

Any of you know how to update the maps on a pre-dual layer DVD RNS510 using Memory Card? Even better - any of you know anybody or business that can update the firmware (to the version that uses 7 digit post code) and the maps to latest 2019 / 2020 maps?

Just to make you aware, RNS510 that dont have the star button are the older model with single layer DVD drive, so maps 2016 on cannot be read and update in these models.

Have done this on 2 cars,
First was via the process listed on here years ago, downloaded firmware, downloaded updated map.
This worked fine and at the time I ended up with a version A running firmware 2760 (which gave the full postcode search) and latest map at the time.

As you have realised the HDD is smaller and the dvd drive is not dual layer on the A model.
So the golf I have now also has an untouched version A.
I took the plunge and bought one of the kits on the well known auction site.
It consisted of the latest possible firmware (for version A) on dvd. A special loading disc and map data on sd card.
Basically the firmware updates first as normal, taking the sd card limit to 32gb, Then you run the loading disc which makes the unit take map data from sd card rather than the dvd drive. The bigger sd card capacity can handle the newer bigger map data.
It worked well. The old A unit now has much newer firmware and 2019 maps. Cant remember exactly which versions but I can check for you if you like.
Good luck with it, support for the older versions seems to be running out.

Hey thanks for the info.  It was those sellers on the most popular auction site that said not to do it.  They were having customers with a lot of fails with them and so I got put off.  My version of firmware is 4020 and is not 7 character postcodes.  Only allows the first 4.  I think I was told 52.. has it but can’t recall. 

Dilemma though for me.  Would rather pay somebody who has experience to undo in case does end up being a fancy interior light rather than sat nav...

Any ideas?  Money going into MFSW to get Bluetooth function better.
