Top tip
Always ask what cat washcoat weight is  :wink:
A 5-gram washcoat will get through an MOT, but due to it being an entropic surface coating it degrades with use - so you have to wonder how many times.
The main cost element is in the precious metal coating, the greater the load the higher the cost.
If you can't get an answer or they don't know walk away.
FYI the OEM cat will typically have a 60gram coating.

Thanks for that info. Admittedly none of that was asked before purchasing but now I know for future reference. May have to upgrade to that powervalve sooner then anticipated!

Mine passed MOT no problem at all back in March. Bought brand new & had been Fitted just over 7 months prior.

So did my APR DP with the sports cat, only just, the first year.  Second year, flat out fail.

Interesting.. I wasn’t aware some high-end sports cats had such a short lifespan, don’t get me wrong I knew that they didn’t last forever but a year seems mental.. especially for the price people pay for them too.

Tell me about it.  The APR DP with 'GESI' cat (iirc) cost me £750 3 or 4 years ago! 

I get my MOT done at the local dealer so there's no rule bending with those guys.  I actually want them to find stuff to fix as it gives me something to do  :grin:

Anyway, first year with the APR it passed but the VW tech said he had to drive it hard for 10 mins to get the cat hot enough to pass.  It failed on the first attempt.

Second year it just flat out wouldn't pass.  CO spec is 0.01%. Can't remember the outer limit for a pass but the APR cat when roasting hot only managed 0.1%. 10 times worse than OEM!

The BCS Powervalve washcoat provides 0.00% on the Co both fast idle and natural idle and 4ppm (parts per million) on the Hydrocarbons (pass is less than 200 ppm - OEM reading is 1 ppm)

Just got a full milltek system, will it be MOT friendly?, haven’t fitted it yet so may stay with stock if so

Is there much of a difference in noise when fitting an after market down pipe? I currently have a miltek cat back with resonator on my mk5 GTI

I've fitted a 200 cell downpipe. Only difference I noticed is a rattling sound under acceleration. There's no difference in noise. I've kept the original exhausts and I probably wont replace them because I want the car to be comfy on long roads. It has the exact same sound as my naturally aspirated golf, which has a sports cat because it was the cheapest option as a replacement part when my OEM cat failed. Sound video below.



Like it's not rattling in the proper sense, but I have no clue how to describe it. Basically a sound that wasn't there with the stock cat.

Yeah that's the one. Tho it's funny. The rest of the exhaust on the Jetta is stock while the downpipe is custom all the way back to under the rear seats where it's connected to the exhaust. On the golf the whole system is stock, minus the cat, which is a sports cat.
