hufcforpromotion, completely off topic, but I saw a couple of programs over the holiday about our forces serving in Afganistan and Iraq.

Bloody brave and professional lot, all of you as well as pretty mad!). Keep you head down and come home safely to your family  :happy2:

Right, I thought I would post my findings as I've just done the MFSW swap on my GT TDI.

Firstly, It seems that all 2005+ cars with at least the midline dash, comes with the correct slip ring so this will NOT need to be changed. If the steering wheel is being swapped without going for additional button flexibility then there is NO coding required in VCDS, just swap and drive.

If like me however, you didn't have a MFSW but are replacing the wheel with a new style one with the buttons that you want to get working, then you will deffo need a new steering wheel control module. My original module was 1K0 953 549F, which most midline cars without MFSW are supplied with. This module is not compatible with the new buttons on the wheel.

I had to change my module for the newer 1K0 953 549 AL module (at apporx £130.00) and also change to the MFSW wiring harness (that connects the airbag to the wheel - part no 1K0 971 584 C - approx £30.00). Ater a little recoding using VCDS, the MFSW works perfectly. I have volume and mute on the left side (with a currently not working phone button as I don't yet have a bluetooth kit). On the right side the buttons cycle through the MFD display on the dash etc.

One word of warning though. My car had cruise control as standard, and since fitted the new wheel it doesn't work. I have been told that it's because the AL steering control module was designed for the Highline display not midline, and that I should have used another. As I'm about to have the Hiline fitted in Feb this year, I'll live without CC for the time being and see if this brings it back on line. In the meantime, If you have CC and a midline dash, I wold suggest getting the assistance of a stealer in selecting the correct module, as at least if they get it wrong you can take it back and get them to swp it for another unit.

Hope this helps but any questions feel free to ask.

Oh, BTW many thanks to SUKH, CJ_TDI (over at UK-MKIVS) and the.ronin (over at VWVortex) for their write ups and being amongst the first brave souls to attempt this and give me some help along the way.

549 AL supports CC so I would wonder if you've not quite got it back together correctly

Alternatively it could be incorrectly coded - Do you have VCDS?

Hi vRStu, we must stop meeting like this...

I was surprised that it didn't work, and am pretty sure that everything went back together OK. The control module is just connected by 2 large connectors with safety clips which both snapped back into position. The board itself is fully pressed home underneath.

As to the airbag wiring, it was basically the same as the one I had with 2 exceptions. Firstly there is obviously the additional small cable and connector that goes into the bottom of the steering wheel. Then as well as the 2 black wires (one into a spade contact either side which I guess is the the horn contact?), there was an additional black and blue cable with a spade connector, which I just connected to one of the spare spade clips within the airbag unit (basically as per some of the photos put up on the forums).

I do have VCDS (legal copy), and used this to program my wheel. My old code was 0000042, and the new one 0002042 (the 2 being 3/4 Spoke Steering Wheel WITH multifunction, WITHOUT cruise control), as I was told the option 3 (which is 3/4 Spoke Steering Wheel WITH multifunction, WITH cruise control) was for US cars with the 3rd CC stalk not the one integrated into the indicator stalk as mine is.

I would really like to get this sorted, so any assitiance anyone could give would be apprecaited. I've asked Sebastian over at Ross Tech on the VAG-COM forum on VWVortex, and am currently waiting his reply ?

Cheers
Andrew

I think 0002022.

0 - N/A
0 - Normal
0 - Manual Transmission
2 - Sports steering wheel with multifunction and without CC (In this case the CC refers to CC controls on the SW)
0 - No Tiptronic with Paddles
2 - Without Computer but with CC (what this does is transfer control of the buttons on the end of the stalk to the steering wheel.)
2 - Rear Wiper
