Screw in a pipe in engine bay, don't know why

I don't how else to put this, but I found this on my mid-2005 GTI.





I think, from looking at other pictures online, that it's meant to go via a pipe across the engine to this location, but I'm not 100% sure as I can't find detailed pictures of it.

Does anyone know what it was and why someone would remove it and block it up with a screw?

Its been blocked to stop a vacuum leak

That's a diy fix to block off that pipe.
there is a specific  vw plastic cap to cover/block off that bit for a mk5.
as long as it's not leaking you're all good to go...

As mentioned it is supposed to be blocked off with out engines and there is a special cap that TPS/dealers can sell you to tidy it up.....although it is green now, as recently got one when I replaced that valve.

I think maybe someone has run a boost gauge in the past? 

Early elbows didn't have that spout (mine doesn't), but I've seen if you buy a replacement vacuum pump hose now, it comes with that spout and is normally plugged with a plastic bung.
