RDFCPETE, how did you get on with the retro fit?  Did you install it in the center armrest in the end, and importantly was that kufatec cable long enough?

I have all the bits coming and would be interested to know how you got on.

If you have the armrest version of the MDI along with the Kufatec loom, then it will be long enough to install

Hi Rich,
It's a fiddly sh1tter but a piece of cake compared to many jobs on the Golf. I found it frustrating however mainly because I damaged the Climate controls in the process and slightly scratched the RNS-510, which is angering to say the least  :fighting:

Make sure you have plenty of tea towels/bubble wrap just to place around the plastic bits on show, as you won't believe how easy it is to dent/score/scratch the plastic on show.

The lead is long enough, just, but there's hardly meters of slack is how I'd describe it. The main reason I was a bit heavy handed was purely because there's no where to rest the RNS-510 easily while you're putting the aerial/speaker leads in the back. I must've cracked my head on the rear view about 9 times too, ouch!  :evilgrin:

You won't need to lift the gear gatoring and ash tray completely out, as long as they're loose you'll be able to feed your hand under from where the MDI lead is fed from behind the RNS/RCD etc...

Same applies to the arm rest, as long as the rear vent is prized off and you have the arm rest open/up, you can feed it into the tray that has the USB port in  :happy2:

If you do it smoothly, you'll do it in under an hour but across the Sat and the Sun, it took me about 3 hours with the cock ups on the way  :signLOL:

Hi Pete,  Thanks for all the advice, I was wondering about the gear lever its probably the thing im dreading most, especially as I have DSG and not sure how you release the gear select button.

I am also planning on installing the pipe to the rear ventilation at the same time, as this wasn't installed along with the arm-rest, I can see alot of scraped knuckles and bashed heads.  But in the long-run I think it will be worth it provided I can get the car back together in good condition, I will need lots of padding, and I just know I will break or damage something  :scared:  I will let you know how I get on!

Never removed the DSG lever and ashtray when I fitted my cable  :confused:

Camel, I was also thinking of installing the pipe for the rear blower on the armrest as I assumed I might need to remove the whole  center console, are you saying that you (and from what Pete said he) didnt actually have to remove the gear lever?  Did you just remove the front side panels, and slip/feed the cable along the side of the console?

If thats the case then I might forget about the air duct, as I dont sit in the back anyway!!!

I just ran the cables along the side of the centre console

When I swapped my armrest over to the cd changer/mdi version I already had the airduct running from the front.

I had to change the duct under the armrest to the version that goes around the cd changer, possibly the hardest job I have ever done on any car, I lost count how many times the air turned blue , the space for the duct is too small for it to fit into, I started to believe that they had built the whole car around the airduct

If you want to run the duct from the front then you will need to remove the dsg lever assembly

This is true as Camel says, the duct gets completely in the way!

I retrofitted my arm rest and didnt fit the duct for the rear vents for use with the climate/air con, so this wasn't a problem for me.

I wouldn't want to attempt it with the duct in its place though! This would almost be an even more frustrating retrofit if you have it in place. Good luck Rich! :signLOL:
