Aerial problem.

I have unscrewed my aerial a couple of times for the car wash, also another time because the up and over garage door hits it and has damaged the top.
The problem is that the captive bit in the actual aerial has stayed on the car and won't unscrew, it just turns.
How do I sort this so I can fit a smaller aerial?
