Performance issues...resolved!
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:50:25 am »
Downloaded Bluefin stage 1 onto my car yesterday and to be honest I'm not that impressed really. Seemed to have better pick up on the motorway but thats about it. My mate was in his standard Type-R with a total of 3 people in and I was in the mine with just 1 other person yet he was still pulling away from me from a standing start!
This gets me round to the engine cover issues. I don't believe the air filter has been changed for at least 15k as I was going to buy a decent one at the last service and change it my self. I never got round to this so the filter will presumably be past its best. So I've bought a Pipercross panel filter to fit but after reading up on how to remove it I have only succeeded in snapping me my bloody cover!
I read this (  http://www.swankmonkey.com/vw/jetta/2006/remove_engine_cover/  ) but I still failed miserably. Now I have a nice crack running from near the MAF to the middle of the cover. The link I read shows the rubber thingys in certain positions but the one in the bottom left (which came free when it snapped) doesn't appear to be where the diagram says it should be? Are all the covers the same or have they been revised on later models etc because it ain't coming free when I pull where it says and I don't wanna snap it again.

I'm pretty sure all TFSI covers are the same just with different dressing.

Stealthwolf did a reasonable guide to cover removal on here but the most important thing is that the engine is warm.
Sorry you broke your cover, they are very dear from a dealers but sometimes show up on ebay for sensible money.

Found it. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3598.0.html

a type r pulled away from you and it had 3people in? wouldn't this suggest more of a problem than just an air filter?

i might think my car is quicker than it really is but with 60 lb-ft more torque at standard and less people in your car id expect yours to at minimum keep up in standard form.

has your car been on a rr?

Go check your dump valve for a tear. Mine runs Bluefin stage one and would eat a type R withou too much problem.

Tackled the cover again when the engine was warm and it came away quite easy this time thankfully. I appreciate that it may be something bigger than the air filter thats causing the problem but the old one was black as coal! Put the new one in and it seems to be a bit better but I'm still not sure. For fifty pound I might just replace the DV with the latest VW one (revision D is it?).

Are there any tell tale signs that I  could look/listen for that might suggest the DV is cracked other than not keeping up with a Type-R?   And when I say not keep up I mean just ever so slighly pulling away from me but never the less, pulling away from me. The lad in the Type-R was also managing to keep pace with a 270bhp Megane with out too much hassle too! Surely this can't be right

Boothmeister, If it makes you feel any better (which it won't) I did exactly the same thing with my cover last weekend, cracked to bu$$ery and really pissed off, and I have removed it a few times in the past without too many problems, they key has to be a hot engine (mine was cold).

I have a stage one on both my wifes GTI which has done 83k miles and it made a big difference, and also on my ed30 which makes a Massive difference. If it hasn't made a really noticeable difference, especialy in mid range acceleration you have other issues, would def look at the DV.

Cheers

John

Rather than just get a new cover I am going down the ITG group buy route, might as well get more power if I have to but a new inlet system which I do now :-(

I live in Ossett, not far Newmiller Dam. How about you? Are you local?

I can't remember how much it cost last time I went about 4 year but I think it was £50 for the RR and a tune up? Gonna give them a ring tomorrow to find out and hopefully get it booked it. If you 2moro you could try book it in for a similar time and we could have natter whilst its on there  :drinking:. Anyway mate here's the link:

Ideally if you have access to VCDS you could diagnose things easier.
