Intermittent codes, OBDII or VCDS?

Had a problem with the ABS, traction control and tyre pressure lights coming on intermittently for a while now, the recent bad weather has pushed me to fix it. Google results mainly from here suggest rear ABS sensor or wheel bearings but every post says get the codes to be sure.

Last year I invested in a nexspeak OBDII code reader to save myself going to the garage and being charged just for plugging in. Whipped it out this afternoon and it's saying no faults at all.

Been a while since I used it might be doing something wrong or do I need VCDS to find the intermittent codes?

Well balls, that was too simple. No it doesn't, I should have done more research when I bought it!

I'm now looking at Bluetooth ones that seem to do everything I need for now, seem to be rated pretty good on Amazon. Still only slightly more expensive than one plugin at the garage, cheers!

Had a look, anyone remotely close to me was last active latest in 2013... unless anyone in Kent preferably near Maidstone is avaialble?

I know cheap ebay/wish VCDS cables are frowned upon here and i don't think many of them even work on mk5 and up.

I finally got an error code of 00287

Ross-Tech website says 00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Rear Right (G44)

Reading other posts on here suggest that just the ABS sensor on its own wont solve the problem and that the ABS ring sensor in the bearing is also probably buggered.

So i'm about to order a Moog bearing kit and Bosch Sensor, just wandering if i should do the other side while i'm at it?

Mine needed both the rear bearings and sensors, twice in the last 2 and a bit years.

Autodoc are cheap if you don't mind waiting for the postage from Germany, I recently paid £30 for a Bosch rear sensor (Euros wanted £83 i think it was)

sensor had rubbed through the tone ring on the back of the hub on mine.

Make sure you get the tool to remove the carrier bolts, you can get it from Autodoc too.

You will also need an M18 Triple Square for the hub bolt, and its an M14 Triple Square for the carrier bolts.

Well Autodoc have changed my order without telling me. The two Bosch sensors remain the same but they changed the bearings to "Stark Automotive" ones... A quick Google leads me to believe they are THEIR OWN BRAND!  Not impressed and they haven't shipped yet and refuse to cancel. The website says the Moog ones are in stock but I was told they are not and the website has not been updated... Can anyone recommend a website and or brand of bearings?

ECP Extortionate?  Dealer bearings are £140+ - each    But then again, they are proper SKF grade bearings instead of chinese 'last a year' crap.

You could try pulling the ABS sensors and clearing the swarf off them first.  Metallic brake pad and disc dust sticks to them over time and can corrupt the signal to the ABS ECU.

As for code readers, not many cheap crappy Amazon/Ebay specials can access the ABS ECU.  VCDS and OBD Eleven (pro) are proper 'Dealer level' code readers with the access rights.
