Are all Remaps created equal?

I've never even thought about modding a car, but have just upgraded from a mk4, 20V, 2.3l V5 golf to a mk 5 Gti and would like to start with a remap.

Car is a 2008, totally standard, 3 door Gti.

Are all maps the same? what should I expect to pay? what kind of £ to bhp can I expect from a basic map? Is a map the right thing to do first? (bang for buck and the right order of things?)Can anyone recommend a company in oxfordshire (near carterton)?

No they're not. If you want the best remap you need to get to a tuner like R-Tech that will put your car on a rolling road (or the road in the case of some tuners) and map to your car and mods. There was no such thing as stages (1,2, 2a etc) for my last car, moving to the GTI was the first time I'd actually heard about it  You could do certain mods before you had to get a different ECU (couldn't tune the built-in one) and get the car properly mapped to whatever your setup was.

I used a local guy In Devon with a rolling road and who had great reviews.
Running 256hp now. Do all the maintenance things including thermostat and a pre cat delete, and run on 99ron.
My standard mk5 was making 219hp even before it was mapped by doing this.

Chap local to me has great reviews. I rang about mine and think it as 230 with a rolling road etc. They mapped a 140 I know of and he's very happy.

So I got it done by a mobile chap who came recommended by a friend of a friend. TO say I am pleased is an understatement £210 for a 25% increase to 255bhp seems like a complete no brainer now! its only 3 tanks of fuel for a car that feels like a new motor!

Yes, maps are essentially the same.  What usually happens in this game is someone initially cracks the ECU's security protocols, writes a map and that then gets copied many times over and distributed by 100s of remap companies.

All that changes is fuel, timing and boost.  There aren't many 'unique' ways to offer anything different.  Tuners throwing out the biggest numbers usually just run more boost and timing than the others.  The extra power doesn't and can't magically come from somewhere else due to some special skill they have over a different tuner.

Not all remaps are equal, far from it. There's a lot more to it than peak numbers, power delivery and throttle mapping are important. My Ed30 had a stage 1 remap from a well respected company of three letters and it was rapid on the road but traction and driveability was a real issue. I took the car to R-Tech for a custom map and the difference is night and day, it makes less power than before but I can feed the power in coming out of bends now as I have a nice linear throttle pedal and not a on/off switch. The fueling on the previous map was also running lean so not good for long term reliability.
