Cam follower, new & old

At a 120,000 I thought I should change the cam follower after reading so many horror stories.
Out of interest I measured the thickness of the new one, it measured 0.080".
After changing it over I measured the old one, it measured 0.076".
So less than 0.005" wear in 120,000 miles.
Car has regular oil changes and isn't mapped.
So if there's anyone with similar milage I wouldn't be in any rush to change it.

Do you have any pictures? I’m pretty sure that amount of wear is more than the thickness of the DLC coating which means it would be close to failing. I’m surprised if there was any of the coating left.

No, no pics at the minute but your right the coating was worn.
The coating must be microns are a few thou thick at most.
Is it the coating that's important?

Nice one, had never seen that before.
I'd say mine was at Stage 1, any wear of the coating was still within the holes around the periphery.

Mine was pretty similar after 110k miles to that off stage 1. Did it again at 145k and it didn't really have much of a mark on it! Was going to do it to the car at 175k there but sold it at the are of this month, so I now have an extra cam follower to sell for bad money!

0.080" is 2mm for those living in the 21st century  :grin:

Impressive wear on your example.  There's no rhyme or reason to follower wear, but excessive revs, poor maintenance and aftermarket fuel pumps are definitely factors in killing them off quicker.
