Odd 4motion/Haldex Issue

Hi, odd one this.

I had the ESP light come on and realised my 4WD wasn't working. This carried on for an entire 30 mile trip and back again. I looked at fuses/connectors, but everything seems fine. Then I notices if I switch the ignition on (ESP warning light stays lit and no 4WD) then switch the ignition off and back on, it goes out and my 4WD works. I've tested this over weeks and there is no issue if I turn the ignition on/off/on... very odd and would indicate that it's not a dodgy connector or a corroding circuit board in the Haldex controller wouldn't it?

Any R32, Quattro or 4Motion drivers that have also seen this issue?

Yes, there are fault codes, but if I on/off/on the ignition and reset them with VCDS, they clear and don't come back until I switch the ignition off/on again. If I just switch the ignition on so the ESP light stays on and therefore no 4WD then I cannot clear them with VCDS, as they reappear immediately.

My query isn 't so much the fault codes, it's the predictable not random nature of it; why would switching the ignition on as appose to on/off/on result in such different behaviour? The scenario I find most confusing is that, the switching on of ignition has different results to switching the ignition on/off/on. If I were to on/off/on the ignition, reset codes (or not).... drive 500 miles, everything would work fine and no fault codes (if I'd reset them) or lights until next time I get in the car and just switch on the ignition. This predictability says to me that there is no issue with the controller or connections as they would be random no?

I'll add that I first noticed this after refitting the battery after taking it off to charge it, as it was getting a bit sluggish with the lack of miles and standing around most of the time these days.

Thank @mjmallia i read those threads before posting and they do not reference the predictable intermittent nature. I.e. if my Haldex controller was faulty I it wouldn’t work perfectly when switching the ignition off and on again.

It's possible it keeps resetting the fault with ignition..its pointing to the haldex unit..there is a company who can check it is working

Thanks Andy, I'll ask them if they think it's the cause and plan to get it off to them if they suspect it is. I don't want the hassle of taking it off and posting it if it's something else.

yeah know what you mean as the haldex also works of the abs but its normally the pump which you can check with vcds

I got in touch with haldexrepairs via Facebook messenger and he was very helpful and explained that they have seen this (intermittent with the ignition) before and is likely caused by corrosion on the Haldex controller board. They do a no fix no fee (and will just return it if it tests ok) so I’ve got nothing to loose taking this off in the spring (when it’s warmer). I’ve got to do a Haldex oil service anyway so just another 2 bolts to remove the controller. £159 for the repair is good value and will hopefully do another 15 years 👍
