Hi All,

Picked up my MK5 Gti a couple weeks ago. My first VW so entirely new to the scene, basically only owned 90's-00's BMWs before now so getting adjusted slowly!

I have a couple of problems with my car that I'm hoping some might be able to help with.

The temp gauge won't hold at 90, but I always have hot air regardless of when the temp drops down to 1/4 on the gauge. Does this sound like a thermostat problem or a sensor problem or maybe even a level problem?

Cambelt and Waterpump needs replacing I believe. It seems there's a lot of opinions on the interval from 120k to 4 years/60k miles, can anyone shed any light on it? Mine was last replaced in 2015 so assuming it needs doing asap?

Does anyone know roughly what it should cost to get the thermostat changed whilst doing the cambelt and waterpump? I've been getting quotes of around £600 all in which is a fair bit more than I had anticipated.

Number plate lights seem to be playing up, they light up when you unlock the car but then turn off after a few seconds. I haven't taken them out yet to check if they're LED units or just LED bulbs in the original holders, could anyone recommend a durable set of lights?

Apart from the above problems it's quite enjoyable really, after all the maintenance bits are done I think an upgrade to a carplay unit is on the cards to update it a little and a cruise control retrofit too.

I had my cambelt and water pump done at same time as thermostat and coolant temperature sensors at a independent specialist. All in it was about £660 so your quote is about right to me.

I just had waterpump and belt done with genuine VW kit for £425, if they are doing the thermostat for an extra £175 then that seems a good price as I’ve seen prices for the thermostat at about £300 due to labour time .

£300 for thermostat change - Wow that is really steep!
Its an annoying fiddly job working under the intake manifold, but not that time consuming - in and out in an hour.
Best to change the coolant sensor at the same time.
