Mk5 Gti. Silver Gti Grill Badge Come Off.
« on: February 06, 2021, 03:29:40 pm »
Think my daughter may have caught it so was just hanging off. Unless it's been messed with. Looks like it's screwed in, one side of the badge has broken off on the screw head. Any other way to secure it. Maybe tough super glue?.

Also how is that badge supposed to be secured?. Mine seems do have two bolt holes in the back but others I've seen online are held in just by clips?.

I do hope someone hasn't assumed it's held in by clips and tried to remove it not realising it was held in by small bolts.

It should have no screws in it. Someone must've tried removing it previously and F'd up its tabs...then used screws to hold it on. Some people believe you can remove the badge with a simple twist. But this will damage one or more of the three locking tabs. Inserting the badge is done by twisting, but removing is more tricky. I explain it in one of my vids...but my passenger side is your driver side obviously. Watch 2:15 to 4:20 for removing the badge and then 10:20 to 11:10 for installing the badge;

Thanks for the reply. That 2.15 part of the video is showing the vw emblem. I am refering to the gti silver badge

Have edited my thread title. Apologies.

If it’s standard grill & badge - it should just be plastic clips designed to fit in one location, no screws

Oops...my apologies as well. No problem.
That also has no screws...it just snaps in. It has single-sided barbed tabs going into slots.

Ah ok cheers guys. I did edit the thread title.

The one that came off looked to be screwed in, definitely not clipped in. If it was an attempt to steal it maybe that's why only one lug was snapped. No damage at all to the grill.

The ones I've seen on ebay (half the cost of oem) look to have screws and a plate it sits on. Looks a better idea tbh.

I see...some aftermarket options are that way. The OE Emblem is chrome with snaps.
Many options with the red letters come with bolts. I don't know why, unless they presumed they would be more universal.

This is the OE emblem; https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/gti-front-grille-emblem/1k6853679dfxc/

Think I would prefer the one with bolts. The clip in oem would and is so easy to pinch. Maybe at some point on my car this has happened and a previous owner has gone for a bolt type instead. Would the red suit or should I try and find the silver version!?!

Another thing to consider is what state your current grille is in - I replaced my grille recently, to remove the Gti badge I had to break a blocking retaining tab off the grille, not sure if an OEM badge would hold as securely after that adaptation, leaving only nuts and bolt option.

Also, if you wish, with some washers on the back you could change the badge location.

Grill is in great condition tbh. Will try some adhesive glue over the next couple of days and see how I get on. Without thr badge looks pretty good, but want if back to how it should be.

Chrome appears difficult to find with bolts (US search). I only see red having the bolts.
You could snap in the original chrome emblem and fashion a way to lock it in place.

Both of my grilles are badge-less. I carefully cut away the slots, leaving the honeycomb, so it doesn't look like something is missing.

Only saw the red and black too. But general thoughts are they are pretty terrible in quality.

I would think so...but if only these MK7 would fit the MK5 grille; https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/front-gti-emblem-red/5g0853679pwyr/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAvP6ABhCjARIsAH37rbSrJNdxeJxrJPhheF0gw5V7nsnkd2PcI2zyaNoB6IebUxxjyHRs9ScaAh8iEALw_wcB

The letters have alignment slots in the black background and could maybe be transferred to the background of the mk5...but for the cost and the risk for if it doesn't fit or is sized differently?!?!?
