Seat Fabric/Bolster Repair - Mk5 Grey Seat Fabric
« on: February 23, 2021, 03:12:07 pm »
Looking to get the standard seat bolster wear repaired. Spoke to a local trimmer who suggested I try and get hold of a piece of the fabric and then he'd do the repair.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of the grey fabric or does anyone have an old seat cover/piece of fabric they are willing to sell? Seems to be pretty difficult to get hold of!

Could try buying a door card or an armrest on ebay, probably cheapest form of buying something with the same fabric attached. Either that or just sell your seat and find another thats in better condition.

I've managed to find a non OE replacement material from these guys... http://www.classiccarservices.co.uk/

It's not a 100% match as it's a slightly different texture/stitching layout, as you can probably see from the picture below but I think it's pretty close. The trimmer at the above company said he'd used it on Mk5 seats before with good affect. It's certainly going to be better than having a large hole in the seat. Think it's £45 a meter, so if I have any left when I've had the repair done, I'll put it up on here.

I was going to buy some material from them a couple of years ago but forgot. Last I looked they weren't showing and of the mk5 material on their site, which one did you go for?

Buy this and you have a whole seat to use the material off. Sorted

I had definitely considered this, my concern was that there might not be enough material on a rear bench to replace all the panels you'd need to on the front seat to repair the bolster wear, the panels do appear to be quite long. I also though it would be a safer bet to go for new material (even if it's not an exact match) rather than use material off a bench thats already 15+years old.

I emailed him after finding a thread on here with the link to his website. He sent through a sample but having asked to buy some I've not had a reply. Probably need to give him a call to be honest.

15 year old yes but how much wear does a rear seat get compared to a drivers seat.

Soon as I bought my car 5 years ago I put a seat cover on the drivers side and never took it off. My seats are leather and still look pretty new.

Before I sourced a set of ED30 interior for mine I was looking at breakers in Germany and could source standard fabric and tartan front passenger seats quite cheaply (about £100-150 delivered). I never could find out for sure if their passenger seat was exactly the same as our drivers but suspect they would be. Now with Brexit I suspect it may not be as straightforward or as cheap to get as it used to be but could be an idea?

It was more the cost of paying an upholsterer 300 notes, maybe more now, on top of what ever you pay for the material made/makes it hard for me to part with the cash for one seat!
Not thought abot a German breaker tho.
