Still stuck with this if anyone has any ideas? Is it just a case of removing the front bit of the steering wheel,in which case does anyone know how it comes off? Thanks

Slide the drivers seat back & wind down drivers side window and then disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Drop steering wheel down and prise of the horn/air bag cover, stubby screwdriver helps.
You should now see the small torx screws holding the blanks on. Remove these and pop off the blanks and replace with new buttons and connect and tidy up the flat connection wires., clip the horn/air bag cover back on and reconnect battery. Start the car leaning thru the window, just in case air bag was to deploy, take it for a drive and any warning lights should reset themselves.
That's as much as I remember, there should be a few more detailed guides online if you do a search. I'm no expert BTW.

Thanks for the info. I actually can't find a guide online for just replacing the buttons. All of them seem to involve removing the steering wheel. Was wondering if you had to remove the whole wheel to do this job but your post confirms I don't. I take it there are no clips/certain points to prise off the front cover, just get under it with the screwdriver? Got to admit I'm a bit worried now about the airbag going off! Imagine it's a hassle to fit a new one if it does.

Get a small mirror and look in at the back and you should see where to prise it off, think I popped mine off around the top and yes no clips etc
Yes def don't want the airbag deploying lol

Ive got some mfsw buttons I want to add to my 08 dsg (with paddles)

Are you saying you already have paddles or are adding them as well?

I added mfsw to mine with original paddles - there is information out there, the thing that does not get mentioned is the blank on each side have a circuit board that the paddle plugs into and then a ribbon out to the box at the bottom of the steering.

Hi thanks for the tip. Don't need to add paddles like you i already have them. If anyone has a link to a guide to add just the buttons it would be much appreciated.

It has been some time since I did mine but once you remove the airbag off you will see that there are 2 torx screws holding the blanking plates. Simply remove these and then replace with the buttons and attaching the connector at the bottom. It’s really easy once you remove the airbag - you will see what needs to be done.

So, tried prising it with quite a bit of force from all angles and it won't budge at all. It is definitely just the front cover you have to prise off and not mess anywhere else?

Edit: Also now got a steering angle sensor fault F@#!

YouTube how to remove steering wheel air bag it really should be a simple job, your steering fault is probably just because you’ve had the car battery disconnected and will need to drive a little bit to clear it

Might be me being thick then. Is it the section in line with the buttons(blanks in this case) that prises off?

You need to remove the airbag from the steering wheel
