What stereo is in your mk5?
« on: March 01, 2021, 02:38:59 pm »
Looking for recommendations for an aftermarket stereo. What have we all got and is it any good? Are the android units worth looking at e.g Xtrons, pumpkin or better to go with tried and tested Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony?

I've got pioneer AVH X3700 Dab in mine, it's really good & the sound quality is really good with loads of settings to choose from. I've had a Xtrons before previously it was a decent head unit with loads of features etc but the sound quality did let it down & only  downfall but you get what you pay for.

One of these and I love it. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000421669956.html?spm=2114.12010615.8148356.1.1592582bvmupX3
did you have to use the extra fuse to make sure it switched off with the engine and doesn't drain battery?

btw OP; there's a 12 page thread on this that I've been reading (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,109724.135.html)

If your golf is older than 08 you just need to get the newer gateway https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=7N0+907+530+gateway+&_sacat=0 and have it coded. The jumping fuse thing is a bodge job.

unfortunately mine's 2007 so will need the extra fuse splitter (
&t=491s) doesn't look too bad just extra faff.

the good friends at AliExpress suggested this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32888260904.html) to prevent battery drain

Hi mines a 2004 A3 (electrically identical) and I’ve never heard of this extra fuse thing. I just changed the gateway no need for extra anything.

I've just purchased an RCD330+ with wireless CarPlay. Guy on YouTube called DDRen sells these and the associated kit. He's in China, but a top lad and very very clued up, plus replies to any texts or questions immediately. - https://www.rcd330.com/

I've also bought a flip rear boot badge camera, which integrates in to the RCD330+ I've started fitting everything last night so will post up some pics later. I love the fact that this set up has wireless CarPlay, hence once my iPhone is paired, I don't have to plug it into the head unit everytime to activate CarPlay

Cheers
Louie

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up going with a Kenwood DMX5020DABS, got it fitted by a local 'car audio specialist' yesterday and this is the result, believe it or not it was worse than this at first, stereo was left loose and sat way back in the opening and bottom trim wasn't even attached. So now I'm left with a trim that has gaps and won't go back together properly and two deep scratches which he did with a screwdriver trying to force it in. He had to Dremel some of the the plastic around the opening as the stereo wouldn't fit in?

No way I can live with it like this so I'm going to have to start taking it apart again. Oh and the bit of scratched trim is nearly £50 to replace. He even had the cheek to ask me to leave him a review on Facebook. Oh the reason for the trim not going back together is apparently 'the car isn't designed to take aftermarket stereos so you'll never get it perfect' which is obviously bollocks. In the end I got tired of arguing so looks like I'm just going to have to swallow it.

First world problems etc. but from a so called professional I think it's bad. The top trim just will not click together and the fascia is loose aswell.

Shocking work :fighting:
I'd be taking it back and getting them to put it right and also replace the scratched panel

I know it's really annoying me. I wouldn't let him near it again as he's clearly just a bodger. The dab aerial, mic etc. was already wired in from another stereo so he didn't have much to do. But thought I'd would pay someone to ensure everything worked correctly and for a tidy installation, he only charged £30 (alarm bells should have started ringing?) But now I'm facing £50 for the bottom trim, tenner for a fascia which he's scratched up aswell, plus I don't know if he's warped the top trim trying to force it. Really f*cked off tbh.

Like I say I will attempt to put right this weekend but if anyone knows anyone in the Kent area that could put this right please let me know.
