Tapping into Reverse Light
« on: March 04, 2021, 04:51:44 pm »
Hi Guys,

I recently bought a dash cam that included a rear view camera. The rear view camera is usually shown in the corner of the dash cam screen.

When reversing, if I have the wire connected to the reverse light, it will then enlarge the rear image.

The issue I'm having is actually locating the cable to tap into.

Any ideas where the positive reverse light wire is (not the bulb part, but getting to it before the tailgate)? I was hoping it would have branched off of the rear light loom but can't see anything like that.

Car is a Mk5 GTI DSG.

Thank you.

Haynes manual circuit diagram shows a Black/Blue stripe cable feeds the reverse light in the hatch

They have a reputation for inaccuracy, referred to as "the book of lies" - just check it is the correct one before tapping into it.

Any idea where in the hatch?

I was hoping it would be on the loom to the rear light. If not, I can't see how the cables are getting to the tailgate so I can intercept there.

I fitted a parking sensor kit recently and had trouble identifying it and ended up just going straight to the lamp itself.
A bit of a pita but I wanted to remove as little of the plastics as possible.

Hello,

What did you have to remove to feed the wire to the boot? All the C Pillar? Or the boot plastic as well?

I'll most likely go down this route.

Thanks

From memory the right side boot trim and the tailgate panel, I pushed the pillar trim back enough to feed the wire through the grommet into the tailgate.
A bid awkward but saved breaking more plastics.
