Timing belt kit - oem or Euro car parts?
« on: March 13, 2021, 12:15:29 am »
Golf is due a belt + pump replacement soon and I’m just wondering what the general consensus is on oem vs say euro car parts for the kit?

Can get an oem kit from Coverdale car parts for £230 or pay about £90 from Euro with their current sale on.

My brother who is a mechanic says I’m mad to spend the £230 as it’s all the same stuff, but just thought I’d see everyone’s thoughts on here before I buy one.

Cheers.

I'd trust your brother, my mechanic says the same sort of stuff to me lol, I think its continental belts that ECP sells as well which I've heard are very high quality anyway. It should all be OEM-spec stuff from them so in theory the quality should be the same, its just the parts on ebay I would tend to stay away  as there are legit firms on there selling quality parts but there are some that let's just say do no do that...

Does the ECP one have a water pump in the kit?  Still be cheaper at ECP, but Coverdale kit has the water pump, and from the photos a few other bits too.  Might be worth checking with both shops what's included in the price.

I use the dreaded stealer for all my servicing etc and it’s price matched and discounted as Vw have a discount (heritage parts dept) scheme for all cars over 10 yrs old. They don’t tell you about it but will apply if you ask.
I do how ever agree regarding eBay............buyer be ware

Do you think they would price match/heritage discount for timing chain/tensioner?

Ok cheers guys, just as well you said that as after having a look further the pump isn’t included and is about £40 on top.

So it’s basically oem from Coverdale for £230 or Dayco/similar for about £135. Continental doesn’t seem to be available. Might give another parts place local to me a phone for prices but don’t think I’ll be forking out for oem to be honest.

Cheers lads.

I fitted a Continental belt and water pump kit to my missus's MK4 1.6 a couple of years ago and I was impressed with it.  The same INA bearings/idlers you get in the OEM kit and the whole lot was only about 80 quid.

We don't care about the MK4 (inspite of it being much older and in better nick than my MK5  ) but I would definitely use the same kit on my ED30  :happy2:

Normally a cheap kit looks and feels it, but the Conti one is pretty much OEM.  I would steer well clear of the random Chinglish branded crap though.

You can only ask  :P I know mine did but it depends on individual dealership.

Thanks, how much did you pay for yours doing? And did it included the vvt adjuster? Been reading some include this in their quote as the bolt can round easily...

I had mine done about 5 months ago, I chose to use the Bosch kit. I did as much research as I could before I had it fitted and from what I can tell the continental or the Bosch one is the one to go for. Key advice being NOT to buy a metal impeller water pump.

Mine cost £110 and from what I have read it’s supposed to be the best OEM replacement. I bought mine here:

https://m.autodoc.co.uk/bosch/7884548

Careful ordering anything on autodoc, last thing I bought from there took 2 weeks to come and caused a lot of hassle!

It’s been on for 4000 miles now and I have nothing bad to say about it

What's the reason for avoiding a metal impeller?

Thanks

I bought a genuine VW timing belt kit and waterpump from TPS, they had a sale on 50% off timing belt kits.
Whole lot cost me £130 all in, a bargain in my opinion:-)
I also opted to buy the new bolts etc which was another £46

I always ask for a discount at TPS or if they have a sale period coming up.
Oil and filter deal is always worth looking out for :happy2:
