Rust on wings and slight rust door sill
« on: March 26, 2021, 08:38:27 am »
Hi there I've got slight bubbling on passenger side wing, and a fair amount and rust on drivers side wing. And I cleaned out the door sills and there's slight bubbling on the door sill where it meets the wing. I have an mk5 golf gti 05 so I know it's past the 12 year Warrenty thing. Just wondering as it's a known issue and the cars only done 70,000 miles if I've any hope of getting it fixed. As it's a defect. Many thanks guys

The wings are a known 'fault' but as it's past 12 years you will have to pay to fix.

Very common on the sills due to this mess that builds up behind the arch liner:

If you're asking if vw will knock some money off or do it for free then I think you're going to be disappointed. You can just replace the wing for a 2nd hand one or buy a new one and paint it, not a big issue. For the sills, on mine at least om going to have to remove the doors to be able to get to it and remove the rust and paint the area/blend it in.

If you want a good quality job and not just d.i.y it so its OK then I'd find a local body shop with good reputation and get a quote frankly. You can always try VW I guess but I'd super super surprised if they even entertained the idea.

I thought that but saw someone mention they got it done as its classed as a defect rather than just general warranty. Didn't know if it was even worth trying my luck or just buying aftermarket wings.

Yeah thought they wouldn't really. Didn't know if people had, had much luck. Not had the car long but I noticed both the foam in the sill/ bottom of the wing where already taken out. But the drivers side had a huge wet mass of mud leaves and crap. I've now cleaned it all out and jet washed in there but obvs noticed some light bubbling. I'll have to take the wheel arch off to looking at that and clean all that out.

Not heard that, worth trying I guess.
There's a place in Scotland where they sell pattern wings sprayed to what colour you need. Some peeps say thay fit really well some say not so, maybe some one on here has used them? Lothian parts or something like that.

Lothian parts, I've got a wing from them, needed slight tweaking but I'd be surprised if an OEM one didn't either.
