Tyres
« on: April 06, 2021, 02:03:26 pm »
What tyres are people running? Just have a standard mk5 GTI but previous owner has fitted some cheap tyres on the front, going to get all 4 corners changed. What tyres are best on the GTI in terms of road noise and comfort? Just looking for a good balance?

Can't go wrong with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

I’m looking to upgrade to 18s in the near future, I’ve been finding it very hard to source PS4 S! This is the only uk stockist I was able to find stocking them in 18/235/40.

I think it was a typo when he said ps4s as it has only recently been released in UK in 18” diameter -most likely meant PS4. They’re great tyres and more comfortable than the GY F1SS which has stiffer sidewalls.

Do both of those have rim protection?
Black MkV Gti (Nov 2008), no modifications

Ah yeah think you’re right, from what I’ve read in reviews, PS4 is plenty enough for good comfort and road holding

There was no mention from OP which wheels size he/she had so I suggested the PS4S. As others have commented PS4 are a great alternative as are Goodyear Eagle F1A5, both of which I believe are available in an 18" 225x40x18 or 235x40x18. Or you could try the Continental ContiSportContact 5P.

My point is that the P4S is so new here in 18” that hardly anyone will have had the opportunity to try them on GTi. A couple of years ago, the Michelin technical team told me that the P4S was aimed at heavier cars than ours when he explained why it wasn't available in 18".

I’m running Assymetric 5’s. you can see a close up photo on my project post!
Happy with their performance but haven’t put them to a real test yet.
They have a rim protector on them, which I didn’t actually want, but is handy to know there is that extra bit of protection there
