Irish mk5
« on: April 06, 2021, 08:10:38 pm »
Hi all

First post here- just an intro to my mk5.

It’s actually quite a rare spec. It’s a single owner 2009 model that was imported all the way from Australia to Ireland! All original parts, black leather interior, 6 disc cd changer, oem bottle opener, heated seats, air con. Even has an untouched oem first aid kit!

I picked up some little gti seat handle inserts and also invested in these genuine OZ alloys with Asymetric 5 tyres :)
I have some plans for more mods but next up will hopefully be a revo stage 1 map with before and after dyno runs. It could also use a detail to freshen up the paint.

I’m sure I forgot stuff there but let me know what you think!

Edit: I remember now where the rest of my money went:
Timing belt done, cam follower done, thermostat done, new battery, new Ariel, heko wind deflectors.
It’s also low mileage, bought at just 120,000km!!

G'day mate!

Car looks in good nick, and good to hear of the work you've done. Only thing you didn't mention is dsg service, is it up to date?

I don't usually like aftermarket alloys on the mk5 but they really do look good  :happy2:

Keep the thread updated with any mods you do will be interested to read about it.

Very nice. The leather looks pretty clean for 11 years old 👍

That looks great on the OZ wheels mate. Car looks to be a very tidy example, great find.

Good question about the DSG service. I’ll need to double check that one and get it done!

Almost forgot to show this prized possession  :signLOL:

Another picture for the groupies:

I’m also looking for opinions on window tint.
What do people think on doing the back 3?
It can look good, but it can also give it a van-like look I feel!?

Boring update:
Removed my bonnet liner today. It was dirty and annoying me and I much prefer the bare metal look.
Kept it temporarily incase noise becomes an issue but it seems fine!

Minor update- I swapped all my bulbs out for Osram cool blue intense spec.
I did a lot of research and these were the best I could get to have all matching.
I’m somewhat happy as they’re much newer looking than the old yellow colour I had.

But they’re a white colour and have absolutely no blue in them whatsoever- which I was disappointed about. I think a full headlight upgrade would be a better investment!

Couldn’t get proper pictures but you can sort of see the difference here- left is my old yellow bulb and right is my new white bulb. (You need to look closely!)

I’ve swapped out sidelights, headlights, full beam and fogs so that they’re all matching!

Half an update here;

I picked up an Srs-Tec spoiler extension. Heard a lot of negative reviews about these but also see a lot of cars that look great with them. So I bit the bullet and ordered one.
I thought it was coming as a gloss black part, like the maxton stuff, but it is instead bare plastic that needs painting. So now I think I will have to colour code it to match the car…
First impressions are that it’s a good fit but overpriced for what you’re getting!

Nice car - like the wheels.  :notworthy:

In two minds about the spoiler, look forward to seeing it colour coded.

So ever since I bought the car the front grill has been damaged around the VW badge. Between that annoying me and the discolouration it was time to get it replaced. I had been on the look out for a genuine replacement but anything I saw was worse than what I had! So I took a leap of faith and picked one up on eBay for a reasonable price.
I’m extremely happy with the quality of it. It’s the proper satin black finish and fits well. I’ve noticed that the GTI logo isn’t right though, so I’ll be swapping that out for the original.

New grille:

My only issue now is that the grille looks newer than the rest of the car! A good wash and maybe painting the lower grilles will have it all blended together nicely.

Also have my spoiler extension painted so another update to follow soon!

So since my last post my progress on this has done a complete 360…

Had the NCT (that’s MOT to some of you) and almost passed with flying colours. Having specifically replaced my bulbs with road legal Osrams I was dissapointed to find out they had failed the headlight alignment test.
Brought it to the garage and they said the beam pattern was just a big smudge.
They went ahead and swapped out the bulbs without consulting me- so I had to pay for another set of bulbs even though I had the originals sitting at home.

Got the retest done no problem, and quickly went about putting my osrams back in.

I took the opportunity to get the headlights restored too. One of them had very bad corrosion patches which have been removed completely now! :)

As for my Srs Tec spoiler extension - I did a lazy paint job on it that I wasn’t happy with. It looked crap in comparison to the car.
I went to fit it anyway but only after trying to stick it I realised that the figment was indeed a load of sh*t.
So it’s now sitting unused and I don’t know what to do with it.
Very disappointed given the cost of it, so I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Don’t know how Srs Tec can get away with such scrap.

Had a bit of a headache with the car the last while too. Flat tyres, pressure warnings, oil warnings… it all happens at once.
But I’ve given it some TLC and gotten it all sorted now and have convinced myself there is no need to sell just yet :P

Get some pictures up dude! Always eager to see other Irish ones  :happy2:

I do have the link:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254129990386

Funnily enough I was going to buy it off a seller who claimed it was genuine. When I asked for proof he sent me this link.
Considering he was asking the same price, I went for the one on eBay instead ha

Haven’t updated this in a while…. Mainly because nothing has changed.
Ended up selling the srs-tec spoiler to a member on here in the end.

Had to do some repairs on the old brakes so ended up doing a little upgrade while I was at it! New Brenna drilled disks and pads all round :)
