Transmission whine around 30mph
« on: April 13, 2021, 07:29:00 pm »
Anyone else find they have noticeable transmission whine around 30mph? Sounds like gear whine to me rather than bearing, like at a certain road speed the crown and pinion wheels in the diff give off abit of backlash noise. Drop a few mph below 30 and it’s gone, go past 35mph and it’s gone 😂 not sure if it’s a coincidence but since I’ve fitted bilstein b8 and springs it’s seemed louder 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Hi!

Yeah I noticed that in my completely standard mk5 this weekend gone, it’s so faint that it doesn’t bother me and if it does, music always fixes it

2nd gear is the loudest when I’m giving it the beans. 3rd and 4th both whine a little bit. 4th is most audible on smooth road, between 30-40mph like you said.

I wouldn’t worry, my car is a hair under 80k and in good working order, after 14 years it’s not a shock that a gearbox whines a bit. Does make me think I should consider a fluid change however.

I wouldn’t have thought that suspension would cause that much of a change in noise? Placebo effect?

I was thinking more emphasised road noise with hard shocks which maybe brings more attention to it! I changed my box fluid when I bought the car around 95k. Old fluid was clean with zero metallic in it etc. Filled back up with oem oil, better to be safe than sorry!

Mine has had a slight whine since fitting stiffer mounts all round.... Been like it for 5 or so years, had had box oil, never got any louder or given me any issues in the 40k miles covered since... Only noticeable when cruising around town... When accelerating or at higher speed its not audible

Normal.  1st & 2nd gears are huge.  More teeth = more noise + thin OEM gear oil = even more noise.

For extra reassurance, I fitted a 30K old 2011 MK6 gearbox last year.  Tight as a gnat's chuff but still the same whine in the lower gears

VAG have never made a decent manual.  Turn the stereo up and ignore it  :happy2:
