Ride quality on 18" Monza vs 17" (getting old)
« on: May 11, 2021, 01:52:46 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I am a relatively new GTI owner. (This time around at least)

I must be getting old as I find the ride quality on the 18" Monza's (running Eagle F1's)  too crashy on my local crappy roads....

Wondering how much difference a set of 17" might make? I like the look Mk5's on Team Dynamic 17"

And is there much of a market for selling 182 Monzas. There always seem a few on ebay, but wonder if they ever actually sell...

Thanks for any input.

I've wondered about this myself for the same reasons as yourself.  I'm sure I've read somewhere that most if not all the original press cars were on 17s so take from that what you will.

I used to run 18inch BBS TT alloys on my Audi A3 in the summer and 17 inch audi s line alloys in the winter the 17s were a better ride and the car handles better , but it was an 1.8 se not an S3 and came with 15s from the factory

Couldn’t  wait to get the BBS back on as the looks were so much better

A set of good looking 17s should tick both boxes for you 👍🏼

I run 18” Monza’s with Michelin PS4 during summer (I have them back on now) and in winter just past I was running 17” Monza’s with Yoko Blue Earth Winters. I honestly didn’t find a huge difference between them comfort wise BUT I didn’t/haven’t done too much mileage on either though. The 17’s probably a bit more comfortable but the tyres were a lot nosier. So that added a bit of harshness back in.

I found the biggest difference in ride quality was when I changed over my springs, dampers and top mounts. That made a huge improvement.  I’m also going to be changing over the control arm bushes and ball joints which I assume will improve things again.

I am 59 years now...and have 18s on the MK5. I run 225/40-18 tires, but I decided my next set will be 235/40-18. I also, recently, swapped the springs to a softer rated spring and raised it 1.25". FTG before was 24" (shown in the pic) and it is now at 25.25". I raised it so to no longer need to research exactly how I will enter each lot without scraping, before entering, and for the additional clearance for the larger tires to come. The new springs really made a difference but I am hoping the taller 235s will add to the comfort. Even though additional comfort is really no longer necessary. This is the car before raising it...I have not taken pictures of the new ride height.

Thank you everyone for you thoughts.

Think I will research suspension mods and bush replacements etc...

Whilst trying to resist the temptation to go get it remapped and a different exhaust!

Sadly money doesnt grow on trees!
