How to replace ac compressor solenoid

Need to replace my ac compressor solenoid. The only guide I've found is this one from pelican parts which states you need to remove the drive belt to access.

Does anyone know if it's possible to do this without removing the belt? Or if not what sort of labour time you would expect. Thanks

Belt is easy to take off, just a spring loaded tensioner.

Never had a compressor off a mk5 but done many other cars, usually belt off , electrical connectors and about 4 bolts and she's off.

P.s just out of interest does anyone know whether it's possible this was disturbed/electrical connector disconnected etc. When replacing the main thermostat? My air con seemed to die just after the stat was replaced...

It's possible of course.

Have a good look at the wiring, it may have been pulled when they've removed the compressor to access the stat or something.

I changed my AC compressor a couple of years ago and it is quite straight forward........just make sure to get the system purged professionally of the AC gas/oil before opening it up.

When you do the compressor, you should also change the dryer too.

Thanks for the reply. I am only looking to change the solenoid valve not the actual compressor, but what do you mean by the dryer?

Also I'm reading that as these compressors run all the time they can seize very quickly without gas in them, so worried about driving for a couple of days with no gas in before I can get back to the garage for a recharge.

It keeps the moisture out the system and usually forgotten about.

If there is no gas in it, then it should be stuck in economy mode which turns the AC off and allows it to free wheel.

This is exactly what happened, Took the undertray off and there it was hanging!

Yes mate. I didn't think it would be as we lost some gas when I fitted a pressure switch incorrectly (should have just checked the solenoid connector first tbh before trying this but it was a cheap potential fix). But as soon as I turned the AC on the fan started running where it didn't before and i have cold air again.

One thing is I don't think it is mega cold so this maybe where I lost some of the gas. But also heard the AC on these isn't all that, so I'm just debating whether to get it regassed again.

And if anyone wants a free regas, just unplug your AC solenoid before going to Kwik fit and they won't charge you  :grin: only joking please don't do this.
