Downpipe Turbo Studs
« on: July 04, 2021, 12:06:11 am »
Finally got my Pipeworx sport cat - I am getting a new gasket, nuts and studs for the turbo and will re-align my system with new W4 Mikalor clamps for the rest of the system.
Some Q's:
How likely are the old studs are to shear?
Do the old studs come out OK from the hot side housing?
Or - if they are in good nick, am I best just leaving them alone?

I've replaced my turbo twice and removed it again for a head rebuild. I prefer to have a new set of studs and nuts ready to go. Some studs may come out of the turbo flange and others may not. Just remove the studs that remain and then replace all with new hardware. You may want to give the old studs a long soak with penetrating oil before loosening. You won't be happy if any of them break.

I recently re-watched the humble mechanic drill out a sheared stud when he did a Mk5 - I suspect I would cry!
Thanks I will have new hardware ready to go and will plusgas/super crack it as much as I can
