The time has come to say goodbye
« on: July 18, 2021, 09:34:46 pm »
Today I sold my mk5 GTi after 10 years and 137,000 happy miles together.
A change in circumstances has meant I need something more practical, cheaper to run and less likely to need care and attention.

So I’ve let it go, 2005, no mods, serviced every 10k or so, currently on 202,120 miles - I’ll miss the little GiT

Looks fantastic too. What did it sell for out of sheer interest!?!.

£1,250 - which was better than the £400 trade in offered

Regardless of miles that's a bargain imo

That is so cheap. Madness how cheap the English second hand car market, even with the peak it's had recently.

Once a car goes over 100k then they're pretty much scrap in most UK buyers eyes.

Have to agree that's a bargain even with the mileage. Out of interest what were the running costs like taking it from 100k to 200k?

Regular oil and filter changes, cambelt and pump when required.
New springs, brake discs, couple of brake calipers, bonnet catch and cables, tyre pressure sensor (and wheel bearing), nothing serious or non consummable

yep, that is a real barrier for some people.

My little Lupo runaround has done over 160k and still going strong.

Luckily the buyer is an enthusiast who has a Mk2 GTi already and has been looking for a 5, also is a motor mechanic by trade so will be able to care for him and treat him well. Apparently it’s only going to be used on sunny dry days, so a suitable retirement home

Maybe I'm just unlucky but in the first 4k miles I've had mine (bought at 99k miles with full VW history) it's needed both thermostats, ignition switch, lambda sensor, Maf sensor (issue still not resolved), Steering wheel control module, and a few other bits. It is reassuring that yours was still going strong at over 200k though. Did you ever have the chain & tensioner done?
