!!Cured!! Suspect cam chain rattling after new chain fitted

Hi all, it’s been a long time since I’ve used this site and troubles have started after fitting a cam chain on the Tfsi 2.0 gti I used to own.
Rattling coming from VVT cover and the chain is fitted correctly. Any ideas

Unplug the VVT control solenoid and see if the noise goes away.  If it does, the VVT phaser is shot.

I had an in-depth chat with a VW master tech about noises from under the chain cover, in spite of changing the chain, and he said "Yep, it's why we replace the whole lot and not just the chain/tensioner"

I took the cover off and found TPS gave me the wrong parts for a totally different car so I just put the cover back on without removing the chain or tensioner. The car went away and 30 minutes later the noise was apparent!.  Maybe one of the carbon rings have snapped on refitting?. Also now has a new chain and tensioner but the noise has got worse!.

Hopefully it's not that, it could be a oil control ring busted as you said.  A pack of those is only 40 quid, vs 10x that for the stooopid phaser!

What I would say though, if an oil control ring breaks, you normally get a 'slow response' type fault code.  If it's not fault coding and just making a lot of noise, yeah, I reckon the chap in question is in for a chunky bill. Or he can get a 'MaxPeedingRods' clone for 50 quid and chance it

Diag says slow response from camshaft so oil might be sleeping through where it’s not meant to. Also noise is pretty loud when I tap the accelerator but no noise on idle. Cheers

Yeah sounds exactly like what mine's doing.  If I unplug the VVT solenoid, the noise stops, so definitely either a busted oil ring or the VVT adjuster itself.

It's quiet when cold, because the oil is thicker, but when hot, rattle rattle.

As you may know that this is my old car and I treated her with lots of new goodies and care but the new owner barely drives it but I can feel ball joint rattling and loss of power since I owned her over two and a half years ago now.
Have you opened your one up to check the carbon rings on the adjuster inside the chain housing?. It might just be a case of replacing them like you said as I’ve got a set but TPS said they don’t sell them without the head

Yeah those little buggers.  They used to only sell them with the £700 chain cover.  They were originally made of metal which wore chuffing great grooves into the VVT adjuster, but they're plastic now and available separately for 40 quid.  4 sheets for 3 stupid little plastic c0ck rings.  Insane!

They’re a f***ing joke mate if that’s causing this rattle I’d be amazed as it’s been off three times now so this time I’m replacing the rings and if it doesn’t fix I’m telling the guy to cough up some labour money as it’s taking the p*ss now 

I got the rings off eBay for £23.99 And they’re way to snap if not careful. I’ll be removing this one for the last time if he doesn’t buy that sprocket for me to replace!.

So you’re living with that noise now?

I tried removing the old ones as practice, gently splitting the ring and winding the end over the lip - top one came off, other 2 snapped very easily - I understand they get brittle with age, the new ones feel a lot more flexible.

Cheers mate, I’ve got them here thanks came Thursday. The ones on this gti look and feel kind of solid but I’ll take no chances and try this method but if the noise is still there he can take his can and do one
