Noob with tire rubbing, what to do?
« on: August 11, 2021, 04:45:14 pm »
New to me 2007, 18x9 with 225s. Getting rubbing in the rear and heard one rub in front yesterday on a big dip. On Datsuns people roll the fenders, figure there has to be similar tricks for the VW. What advice can you offer?

Also, what is the right tire pressure? First really low profile tires, so would assume they should run at higher pressures.

Nines are a bit wide....and not knowing the offset makes it a bit tough to help. You could try 215/40. You could try front and rear ARB upgrades to reduce body roll. In front, there is a tab for one screw for the arch liner. Locate it near the upper/center of the arch. You can actually bend the tab up by just pressing upward on the tab. See if that helps. Screw is about where the arrow is ↓

You can try having a professional roll its fenders, but most jobs look poorly done when not done correctly. And remember, not all of the arch is metal. So there's no rolling the sections where there is plastic bumpers. So the rolling must blend into those. I would personally look for a fitting set of wheels. But try making it work if the wheels you have do it for you.

Mine are 18x8 et45 with 225/40-18s.  It is low and they do not rub. But you cannot put a small finger in the gap. I also have front and rear ARBs to reduce body roll and it helps.

I'll tweak the tab in front, thanks.

Mine has sway bars too, but it's over bumps that the rear rubs mostly.

My guess is the offset and width you have will require arch rolling. A narrower tire may help...not sure it is worth the the risk of doling out the cash for a full new set. Maybe ask if anyone has a narrower used set to part with and try them. Oh, tire pressure should be 35 psi (cold).

What suspension do you have?

If you have coilovers you raise the car.

If you have the ability to change their rebound you could try different settings.

It will take more than folding the arch liner tab up to sort that unfortunately.  Both ends will need a full roll.  Do that and you crack the paint, then rust will quickly set in.  MK5s just have no room for big wheels. You need a Scirocco or a TT if big wheels and wide track are your thing.
