MPG
« on: June 30, 2021, 08:58:33 am »
Hi,
I did a recent fuel fun and only got 31mpg at motorway speeds  65-75mph. Is this on the low side or about right ?. Its a Standard car I would expect 35+ mpg. Economy is definetly a bit low over all for my normal city commuting. Im thinking of doing coils and plugs on next service,. No idea when done last. Definitely not in last 4 yrs since i have had it. I'm also considering carbon clean as it has  never been done and is on 140,000 miles now.  :jumpmove:

You should be getting 40+ at that speed since it is off boost. Maybe your pcv needs replacing? That can hit mpg when worn.

Yes that's not right. I've got a stage one mk5 gti and it does about 39 mpg sat at 70 on the motorway.

Is the car getting up to temp ok? sticking caliper perhaps?

Calipers ok, temp fine,  temp sit at 90 after 5 mins. All stats were replaced with a full coolant system refresh a few months ago,

jsut to check back in I finally found the problem . the standard intake snorkely mount was broken and had dropped 1/2 down behind the rad and was not getting enough fresh air. I noticed the MPG was poor and the car felt pretty labored at low speeds. I was on a longer motorway journey over the weekend and stopped mid way and cable tied the intake to the mount up higher behind the grill, throttle response better, intake noise sounds sweeter and I instantly noticed a happier engine and MPG improvements. il report back tomorrow after i top up tank again.

Did you buy a GTI for hypermiling or having fun with? Always cracks me up when people buy a performance car and then complain about mpg

Just ignore the short term numbers. Drive a GTI how it’s supposed to be driven and check the long term average after 5000 miles. If it’s more than 33, buy a diesel.
