2.0t fsi timing.
« on: December 30, 2021, 11:17:34 pm »
First of all Hi all,
Must say this is a great forum.
Just get my first gti mk5 (but with issues).
When setting the timing the top cam has and arrow to line up.
Does the bottom have any markings to line it up to confirm tdc?
Everything I read just says line the top up them mark the bottom but say my belt was to snap or was put on with the bottom out how would I line the bottom up then ?

Thanks

There is a TDC mark on the crank pulley and also the crank timing belt sprocket, but they are there to aid cambelt replacement.

For just a chain replacement, all you need is the cam locking tool.  If it drops in with no resistance, then the timing for that end of the engine is correct.

If you need to set the timing up from scratch, then yes, first you would align everything at the cambelt end with Cylinder 1 on TDC, and then set it at the chain end.

Welcome  :happy2:

Are you having timing related problems?

The most common timing related issue on these engines is people getting the chain a tooth out when replacing it.  The cambelt side is very, very easy to do and you can't go wrong at that end  :happy2:
