Brake fluid STOP
« on: February 25, 2022, 06:41:58 pm »
Anyone had this message before? Car hasn't been run longer than 2 minutes for the last month, in the last month I re-greased the rear pads and shims as I've had a slight binding issue for a little while now (newly refurbished calipers on the rear) and changed from stock suspension to coilovers. In that time I disconnected the abs sensors on the hubs when fitting the coilovers and when starting it up today and looking for faults found faults relating to sensor issues so cleared them all and not come back but got a nice big flashing STOP brake fluid message now, everything looked okay to me. Tried starting it with the fluid reservoir sensor disconnected, then shutting off and connecting it back up and started up again, was OK for a few mins but then came back. This could probably do with a little bit extra in it but doesn't look dangerous low to me:

Brake pedal does feel a little mushy on the drive but before hand it wasn't quite right either tbh even after a brake bleed. Wondering if these refurbished calipers are junk or if its a playing up sensor or what. Ive driven a good 250 miles on these calipers without issues so far its also worth nothin without issue other than maybe a very slight binding occurring but unsure if this is the fault of the calipers. Plan on topping up the fluid in the morning and was planning a brake flush in a week or 2 anyway, but any ideas or anyone else had luck fixing something this?

Also worth nothing I sanded down my pads ends on one side in the hope of less chance of binding so it would move more freely on the shim as shown as the last post on this thread:

Don't suppose this could make it complain about brake fluid if that is just a general fault for anything brake related?

Probably the level sensor gone funny - I would bridge the terminals.

When you were bleeding did the fluid drop low in the reservoir at any time?
On my Mk4, after bleeding peddle felt good engine off, engine on it turned into a sponge, it was air in the master cylinder from not keeping it topped up.
Easy fix on the Mk4 as it has bleeders there, but Mk5 you would need to crack open the line.

If you have VCDS you can get the ABS pump to bleed the system, very good for ejecting trapped air.

Lights not come back after running it for a good 30 mins today and driving it round the estate for 5 minutes, brake pedal is awful though feels like I have almost no stopping power and pedal to the floor every time. I've coded out the brake pad sensor just incase that is playing up and causing issue as I noticed the wires were exposed the plastic covering had weathered quite badly.

Checking the brake after a quick drive on the estate showed wildly different looking discs, they were covered in rust before as its been sat a while and here is the passenger rear, nice and clean:

And here is the drivers side (the one I sanded the pads pegs down on):

Either passenger side is dragging and the driver side isn't or I've proper messed up the pads on the drivers side which is contributing to an awful feel as its barely touching or maybe a bit of both.

It would drop lower in the reservoir but not below the level sensor. We'll I've got OBD-ELEVEN, think you can do the abs pump via this and a schwaben brake bleeder is in the post so hopefully that's the end of mushy pedal and alarming STOP messages!

Did a brake flush this evening after work, tons of air came out. Ran out of time this evening to do an abs pump cycle and Bleed again but drives OK now, for sure it's still a bit a spongey but it's safe anyway.

I was actually messing around with the abs pump cycle feature obdeleven the other day out of curiosity having never done it before and when doing so the brake fluid stop message came back which says to me there is still some but was potentially so much air in the abs pump that a sensor somewhere triggered it.
