Phone cradles
« on: January 06, 2022, 01:45:17 pm »
Most phone cradles for cars seem to be the clip into an air vent style.

Does anyone use these?  Are the flimsy MK5 air vents up to the task of supporting a heavy phone like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, or iPhone 12/13 pro Max?  And what about hot air baking the back of the phone over winter?

Ta

Cant say if it works in a Mk5 vent, but I got my wife one of these for her C7 A6:

It's a good looking bit of kit, doesn't look out of place. Sits well in the vent and magsafe charges iphone 11 well - If you don't like it, you could just send it back

Cheers guys.

Thanks for confirming some vent mounts aren't up to the task, I suspected as much!  A phone holder that slots into the CD hole - mind blown!  Such an obvious idea now I think of it  :happy2:  Who uses CDs anymore?!!

I hate suction cup jobs stuck to the screen, so I will keep perusing some options!

You could go more old school with a pucker bracket -assuming they are still available:
https://www.carcommunications.co.uk/dashmount-711091-upper-console-mounting-bracket-volkswagen-golf-v-2004-2009
And then a magsafe charger holder bolted onto the mount:

Edit: the issue with my provided links is all the phone integration by car manufacturers in recent years will have killed suppliers of aftermarket bracketry & mounts off - carplay with mirrored screen is the ultimate, no bracket required solution... android head??

Cheers matey, that second one looks good.  I don't mind screwing it to the dash, or using some massively strong double sided tape.  I'm probably going to end up scrapping the car or trading it when I'm done with it, so minor blemishes on the dash don't bother me.

One of those Aliexpress RCD330s is certainly an option.  The main reason for the mount is to monitor the engine with an app, so looking down at the radio screen in boost might not be best for safety
