Buying a Space Saver
«
on:

Just bought a MK5 GTI that is missing its space saver wheel. I've seen plenty on eBay, but all of them are 16" or 18" - whereas the tyres on the main wheels are 17" (225/45R17 tyres).
Which should I be buying?
Apologies if this a dumb question.

I’d go for the 16” personally simply because most space savers are smaller than the wheels that are normally on the car, no doubt someone more technically mind will come along with the reason behind this

If you’re keeping the original brakes, then a 16” spare will clear them. Either will do.

As above, if you ever want to fit MK7/S3 front brakes, you will need the 18" space saver. Or maybe a 17" would clear but not sure if they make them in that size?
