Replacing a MK5 GTi?

So my car is getting on a bit and the costs vs what it's worth are heading the wrong way. Shell is on 193K and the engine on 90K (BWA, original AXX went 50K ago). Everything has been done except the chain. R Tech are doing this for £399, however they say that is the VVT bolt doesn't come out then the price jumps to £1100. Now, the car can't be worth much more than that. It has various bits of rust that need sorting and the alloys need a refurb. However, had a full service last year as well as new ARBs, springs, struts, toe-links etc.

At what point do people just give in and sell? It's a 2005 and still the newest car I've ever owned  :grin: I just don't know what I could replace it with, a newer, lower mileage one is all I could think of!

in this place of mind also, mine has had over £2000 spent on it in 2 years i bought it for £4000
clutch flywheel kit £620 injectors £700, then loads of other stuff like coils sparks dv pcv wheel bearings ect,
thinking of the mk7 golf r, but im sure they still have the same faults as other tuned vws

And another one for the potentially throwing the towel in list  :grin:  164K old ED30.  Performance inconsistent (gutless 80% of the time), oil consumption on the rise, clunky and unsatisfying handling, rust here and there, wobbly xenons, utterly shagged alloys, tyres approaching 3mm, etc etc.

Basically it needs a new turbo and possibly cylinder head refurb, full chassis bush overhaul, paint, wheels etc etc.  Looking at £4K to bring it back up to standard.  I think I'm leaning more towards trading it in against a MK6 GTD to be honest.

Inline Thermostat
Ignition Switch
Lambda sensor
MAF sensor
PCV valve
Cam follower
Middle section exhaust

Plus usual costs like servicing and tyres etc.

When you think the car has done 110k miles so could do with

Suspension refresh - £1000?
Possible cam chain inc adjuster - £1000?
DSG service soon - £250?

Then if your dsg box goes you're in for a couple of grand bill....

After many years on here and owning mine for the past 5yrs, I see so many threads about people shelling out thousands on top quality parts and preventative stuff and for what?
Your car is probably like mine 17yrs old, worth about 3k tops and falling apart at the seems.

Why spend 1k every year or so on a car that's worth not much?

Patch it up and enjoy driving it as it's NOT A CHILD ITS A CAR!.. Then use all the money you would have chucked away on a car you won't get back, an spend it on a mk6 or mk7.   That's what I'm doing.

when did your maf sensor go and what were your symptoms

It still isn't fixed! My car was mapped by previous owner and i added i 200 cell sports cat.

Started giving me the following codes with EML light;

P0100 - Mass or volume air flow sensor 'A' circuit

P1114 - Bank 1, sensor 2 internal resistance too high

P2196 - O2 sensor signal stuck rich bank 1 sensor 1

I arranged to get the map tweaked by the company that did the remap to suit any changes caused by the sports cat, when i got there they said i'd need a new o2/lambda sensor as the other one was damaged. All done and they said i shouldn't see these codes again. I also changed the maf sensor for a Hitachi one as recommended on here as a next best alternative to VAG.

After 3 weeks or so these 3 codes came back and have been coming back every month or so for the last 8 months. Each time i just clear the codes as i don't really know what to do having already replaced the lambda, MAF and had the map tweaked to suit new exhaust.

At no time has there been any effect on performance or MPG when these codes are showing so it doesn't seem too bad but it is annoying. If anyone has any thoughts would be interested to hear...

Not sure if it was mate. So is bank 1 sensor 1 the rear o2 sensor then? i think someone said it can be damaged either from over tightening or even from contact with the road?

Question can  an issue with the o2 sensor cause the MAF code? or vice versa?

I also have another two codes which won't go away which relate to the power steering module, these came after i changed the ignition switch (the power steering module sits below so may have disturbed something). Again no symptoms whatsoever so just live with it.

Agree with this to an extent. You see people spending obscene amounts on a standard shabby mk5 with 150k plus miles to make it Stage 3 or whatever with bigger turbo and endless supporting mods upgrades etc. and i can't get my head round it but on the other hand if it's their hobby and makes them happy then crack on.

I would like a mk7 or 7.5 but prices are still high and even if they dropped would be way out of my price range. I've thought about selling mine for 4.5k ish and then taking out a loan for a mk7, the 4.5k would hopefully cover monthly repayments for 18 months/2 years and then take it from there. But just not really comfortable with taking on the debt.

I'm similar with debt, paying off a loan, have a mortgage and don't really want to get any more. Unfortunately, since the car has issues I doubt I'll hit £3k that I paid for it despite suspension upgrades etc. Rock and a hard place as I need a car, that said taking my missus to work will be dropping from maybe 150-200 miles a week down to 50 as she's got a job nearer so less wear. Mate at work has a MK6 GTI so maybe something in that line, hmmm....

What we need is for used car prices to crash over the next 12 months but the mk5 prices stay strong due to 'future classic' etc. wishful thinking

A bit sad reading that, but tbh those cars are getting old and last MK6 and Mk7 are the “same “ but a little newer and in general better.

Mine is a BWA 06 DSG with 188.00 miles (300k Km) the actual plan is to keep it, I have scheduled a full respray and in mind for the future a wheel refurb and this will be all the money I will invest on it.

But already thinking to go for a MK7 – Mk7,5 on the next 2-3 years.

Since I know the DSG box is the original and running perfect. It slightly sounds the flywheel on cold but in general the geargox is very soft.

No oil consumption on the engine, just 0,5 - 0,7l every 12000 Km
