high pressure fuel pump reliability

are the high pressure fuel pumps solid and reliable or do they fail eventually just like the lpfp?

The rubber shaft seals are prone to perishing, causing fuel to leak into the engine oil. No separate parts available to repair, so you need to buy a new pump.

A common failure is when the cam follower wears through. Then you can get the plunger for the HPFP touching the cam lobe. That is easy to check - either fuel actual vs specified values in VCDS or physically pulling it out and checking the pump plunger for wear.
