do coils simply work or not, ive lost around 5-7mpg and performance is down, assuming its the cheap lemark coils as they have done 18 months and 15000 miles, 1 of them has defenately gone as it was missing heavily under load and went away when i swapped in the spare ngk i had, but whats bothering me is the last time i had a coil go it went very quickly got flashing cel then mins later off a cylinder with constant cel,
this time no flashing light or cel even though the coil was clearly at fault, could the remaining 3 coils still be misfiring and causing issues even without a cel, thinking maybe they are on there way out and just about to fail completely

Usually electrical items work or they don't, but there could be some weight to this theory of them gradually weakening over time.  I removed my 4 year old R8 coils due to overly rich running (oil stinks and I could see high lambda activity on part throttle) and stuck my original VW black ones in, and it immediately ran a lot better.  Make of that what you will.

just trying to figure out a loss of mpg and performance and as the plugs have done 20000 miles and coils about the same i went for bosch coils at £25 each and ngk bkr7iex, £130 all in but im starting to think its a maf issue as it seems to be the same symptoms as when i had one go on my old car,

I have only had 1 coilpack go. Car sounded like a sh*t poobaru, and when I popped the bonnet there was smoke coming out of the top of the coilpack and it was about 4,000,000 degrees celsius.

I'm assuming they can be faulty without being off a cylinder because I had one that was misfiring according to my local indi even though I had no idea.

Clear down the learned values and see if it runs better.  If it does, it could be the MAF.

Pull the battery for 30 mins, or if you have VCDS..... 01 Engine > Adaptations > Reset learned values > Save.

was there not a way where by you disconnect it and if it makes no difference then its gone and if the car runs rough then it doing its job?

That is only a f'cked/not f'cked test.  The engine will still run with a less than optimal tired/dirty MAF, which that test does not tell you.

i will do that tomorrow and report back crazy wing and rain at the minute, new bosch coils to go in along with new bkr7iex,

just ordered a new 1 for £85 , this has been an ongoing intermittent issue that has gradually got worse, car does run better after you pull the battery for half hour, and i did find a lot of dirt and dust inside the old 1, if it doesnt sove issue, then maybe map sensor or the pressure regulator on the hpfp, but hoping not

Mine seems to run better on the black coils.  Thinking about it, they are spec'd for boost.  The R8 ones are spec'd for normally aspirated.  Boost needs a beefier spark..... I suspect the black ones have more coil windings, but I haven't chopped them up to compare and confirm.

sorry that was the maf sensor , the coils were bosch £26 each but made no difference, having seeing others have their maf fail at around the 70-80000 k mark, and the fact that it, drives much better when you reset the battery until the ecu starts learning then drives poorly, it has to be a sensor of some sort thats not allowing the ecu the correct values,

Whip the plugs out and check they are not fouling.

its a sensor thats not providing accurate info for the ecu to adapt correctly,  just not sure if its a map sensor or maf sensor, ordered maf if that doesnt fix will try the map sensor, neither sensors are too expensive, im just worried that it could be the hpf sensor on the rail or the regulator on the hpfp as these are very pricey,
its got new plugs and coils and the colour of the burn looks perfect and equal across all 4 , which means its unlikely to be a fuel sensor as this would cause rich or lean burning, and also put my mind at ease that the injectors sealed correctly when installed.
