What oil? (In 2022)
« on: February 24, 2022, 09:47:55 pm »
Hi Guys,

Thought I would see what oil others were using at the moment? All previous threads about oil are a few years old now so would be a good chance to get updated info

I've been using Castrol Edge 5w30 (the ED30 is standard). Not had any complaints with it but I've been using it a few years now and wondered if there was anything "better".

Was looking at Shell Helix Ultra (as it used to be highly rated) but now seems that She'll Helix HX8 5w30 is the only one that is VW 504.00 approved. Is the HX8 any good?

Quantum oil is now made by Fuchs - , anyone used this?

Be interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers

Rich

Millers nanodrive 5w40 for me. Not the cheapest option though at 70 quid for 5 litres. Lots of owners upgrade to 5w-40 as these cars can burn off the 5w-30 quite easily.

Millers 5/40 here too.
Can get it for around £50-55 from Opie when they have a 20% sale.

Why are you looking for better when you dont have any complaints? How would you even know that this new oil is better than this Castrol?

Dont change anything if it is all working as it should for now.

I’ve just bought Nanodrive 5w40 for the first service with with me, but I am wondering why. Light use road car with no track work, and I think I will do 6m intervals. The biggest risks around oil for a car like mine is probably sludging, hence the frequent changes.

Like lots of people here I tend to choose the most expensive option with everything.  :stupid:

If consumption is low and there isn't excessive varnishing going on under the cam cover, there's no need to change.

What you can do if you have VCDS is switch to fixed (15,000KM/9000 miles) intervals, which requires a VW 502.00 5w40 oil, which opens up your choice a bit.

I've been using Mobil 1 FS 0W40 for years but I'm considering switching to Motul Specific VAG 502 due to the price difference.  Everything is hiking in price dramatically, so 3000 mile changes of Mobil 1 isn't feasible anymore

Fuchs are a very highly regarded and reputable German manufacturer.  They've been an OEM supplier for decades and are well known in racing circles for their Silkolene Ester based oils.

The Helix is also a good oil.

Doesn't really matter what you use so long as it's manufacturer approved (more important with DI engines) and changed regularly.

A fair question.

My reason for asking is that Castrol Edge has been the recommend oil since our cars left the factory. Its reasonable to assume that since that time, development of oil has progressed and better products are on the market. I guess in the same way with tyres - new and improved tyres are released all the time. Sure, Michelin PS3's were brilliant a few years ago and would be fine today - but im will to bet the new Michelin PS5's or Goodyear F1 ASM 6's are better.

You are totaly right. But, that Catrol, which is recommended by car manufacturer since the car left factory, is also upgraded through years. I can prove that with fact that normatives like VW 504.00 and 507.00 don't have the same criteria as they used to have 5 or 10 years ago for example. New aditives, new formulations etc.

Yes but we are talking about a 15 year old engine.  What was recommended back then is still relevant now.

The oils have changed in line with tighter clearances, different injection modes, fully chain driven, different service regimes etc, which aren't relevant to the MK5 GTI.

I’ve used Quantum oils for years without issues, Fuchs are one of the best around for quality lubricants.
I use 5/40 on mine changed every 6 months with a Mann filter, regular oil changes are the most important thing and generally cost around £25 if you buy right.
I usually buy the 20 litre cubes to keep on the shelf as mine likes to burn a little bit.
There are lots of choices really but some are a bit ott price wise.

Picked up 2 tubs of Quantum Silver from the dealer this morning. £51   Jeez that's well cheap. The engine seems to run well on it so it's getting that from now on  :happy2:  I think my turbo is on it's way out judging by the tiny little brass specs in the oil/filter this morning, so no point putting expensive oil in it.

Not feeling the cardboard box though.  Reminds me of those cheap boxes of wine from Sainsburys that are always a faff pulling the nozzle through the hole

I wouldn't stick to that brand just because its on the filler cap, it's highly likely they paid to get their name there.

As long as the new oil is compliant with VW standards it should not cause issue - take coolant, G12 has been replaced by G13, backward compatible but with added vitamins and minerals.

20 litre boxes of Quantum Platinum 5w/40 from TPS for me - if you have access to them, they make a big deal out of being able to provide oil for any brand - used to get synthetic Quantum for the wifes Merc.

Welcome to the cheap side!
Yes the box isn't great, the 20 litre boxes tend to get crushed/torn and sag.
BTW it is exactly the same as the wine box... with at least half a litre of oil trapped in the bag.

Going forward I am going to have to hold onto my current stock of 5 litre oil bottles at the recycle centre.

Yes, you are totaly right. I didnt say that you must stick to Castrol. Since the oil meets the required specification (and gradation) you can use it in your car.

When we are talking about coolant, G13 is more ecological then G12++ which is its predecessor. Things dont go in same way for coolants like for oils.

I can recommend Mannol which have realy good price for what u get. I ordered 4L of Mannol combi ll 5w30 which have 504.00 and 507.00 and also have Ester base in itself for lower then 20€. You can read about their products on internet.

Also, ravenol is realy good, but the price is little bit high for me.

I do services on 10k but using 5w30 504 507 oil.

P.S. sorry for my bad English
