Noisy Engine
« on: March 19, 2022, 09:40:51 am »
I know this has been asked a lot of times but I still want input from other people.

So I have a 2005 Mk5 GTI with AXX engine I believe and it is making noises that I don't think is normal for a petrol engine.
I just got the car 2 months ago and did roughly 6,000kms so far, car is now sitting at 97,XXX km.

I did some research and it's all pointing at the timing chain on the right side of the engine which I don't think has been replaced before.

I will be replacing the timing chain in a few weeks, but I'm wondering if the diesel-like noise is normal for these engines?

Here's a video I took while car is warm and idling.

Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell from the engine bay with all the other noises, but if it sounds like a diesel inside car with the HVAC off, windows closed, then it's likely the chain.  Very common on DI petrol engines because of the soot trapped in the oil, which acts like a grinding paste if the oil isn't changed frequently enough.
