Revo stage 1
« on: March 22, 2022, 06:46:13 pm »
Hi,

So i've been thinking of a stage 1 remap for my gti for a while now. I'm looking for more power but not at the expense of driveability, its also got to be a nice safe map without pushing everything to the limit. I would rather 10hp less and know that there is still a good safety margin there.

So Revo is very popular and seems to work well. Also reasonably close to me is AMD.
I would probably need the SPS with the revo, car does not do many miles at all and quite often the battery is on/off being charged etc leading me into thinking it would revert to standard everytime?
Does anyone really use the sps? other than for the above or is it just a gimmick?
The settings, I assume just allow you to add/subtract like a blanket effect across the whole map, not individual rpm or load points??

Cheers  :happy2:

I use it when the battery goes dead which isn't very often. Its worth having though.

can I suggest you get yourself a trickle charger so that you don't have to disconnect the battery for charging.
I have used a Varta one for many years without issue.
Without traction power is nothing!

Had thought about the trickle charger. I don't mind swapping/disconnecting the battery.
Does anyone know why the Revo forgets its settings? I think this is the only one?
Basically is it worth the extra £ to begin with? Then extra on top again for the sps?
Rich, is yours a stage 1? Have you been happy with it over the years?

Thanks

So the Revo tune will revert back to stock everytime the battery is replaced or disconnected?

Yep. It drops to 'Default' settings, which are something like B0, T2, F6 from memory.  The crappy timing level 2 is why it feels so lethargic.  Normally you'd run 5-6 on V Power.

They are the only tuner that do that, and they don't provide a reasonable or logical answer as to why, so one can only assume it's a copyright mechanism.

I've had Revo for years and it drives well, but in hindsight I'd go for a rolling road tune with less aggressive boost onset and peak pressure if you're worried about lifespan.

The SPS is very useful for dropping the timing and boost down if you're on a road trip and can't get Super unleaded.

I like the idea of a valet/wife mode but can't really justify the cost of going to Revo when my car is already custom tuned.

Have you considered a Superchips Bluefin?

I've been running mine for 4 years and had no issues, plus with Superchips being a reputable company I felt it was a safe option.

Also none of that reverting to stock mode nonsense everytime the battery is disconnected.

Yeah they're a good bunch Superchips.  I nearly got the bluefin a few years back but they couldn't guarantee it would over-write the previous map, so recommended I got it flashed back to stock first.....but that is impossible for regular folk to get done.  It seems VAG beat Apple to it with the whole locking sh1t down anti-consumer BS.

I might still give that map a try one day if I keep the car.

It is indeed a nonsense, and thinking about it a bit more, it's a tactic to force people to buy the SPS for another £130ish on top of the map, otherwise it's a trip back to the dealer to put the performance settings back on.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info.
I like the idea of the Revo, but it seems to be more expensive than the others, plus the sps on top. Which I would need but only for resetting, I doubt it would get used for anything else.

Octo, I did think about Bluefin but thought they were no longer around, will look into that  :happy2:

Just had a look and superchips Bluefin seems to have been replaced with a device called Powergate
And there appears to be a linear throttle option on the Revo now.
Anyone tried these?

Why not go to Rtech?

R Tech are on the list, just looking into the pros and cons of the different options  :happy2:

Pudding, whats the stock boost pressure on ed30? How much does the Revo stage 1 request?

0.9 bar.

Revo 1 requests different boost levels depending on the 'B' setting.  B9 requests 1.35 bar.  B0 is stock, B1 - B8 are tiny increments up the maximum.

I run B7, T5, F9 on mine.  The differences between the F and B aren't massively noticeable, but the T setting is where the biggest differences are felt.  The more the better, but essentially, T4-5 for regular 95, T6-7 for V Power and T8-9 for race fuel/octane booster/Meth etc.

Stage 2 maps request 1.5 bar.

Stage 2+ maps request up to 1.7 bar.

Bear in mind the K04 turbo was designed to push 300hp maximum, which is around 1.4 bar, so anything beyond that is death by a thousand cuts.

On a dyno, my Revo 1 showed 280hp and 330lb/ft some years ago, and it felt pretty much unburstable and consistent at that level of tune. It's probably way less than that now given it's age. The turbo is pretty much done at 166K miles, but it's hanging in there for dear life

Before considering any map, first I would get the car as it is on a dyno as a measure of it's health.  A good ED30 knocks out 260hp standard over winter anyway, so for an extra 40hp for stage 1, consider if it's worthwhile for the inevitable lifespan compromise.

Pudding, Thanks for the info, dyno first may be the way to go.

So the Revo, does it have a boost curve as such to get the midrange torque up or is it just an adjustable flat line?
The Revo cars seem to make good figures and with boost at 1.35 bar are lower than a few others stage 1 offerings, suggesting leaner afr or more ignition?
I realise every car will be different regarding its mechanical condition/components/fuel etc
There must be a sweet spot or target afr/boost and timing where the 3 aren't fighting against each other.

166K on the original turbo sounds really good to me  :happy2:
