New ECU or New ECU kit? Golf mk5 1.9TDI 2007

Hi, I’ve posted on here before about an issue starting my car… it’s been 4 months since it was last driven and I have taken it to 3 different garages.

1. Said engine is gone
2. Repaired camshaft and fuel vacuum/pump - said I need to get a new ECU kit(because everything is linked - ecu, immobiliser, key and other components)
3. Was an Audi/VW/Skoda experts who after a month have said it’s most likely an ECU problem. They said they can send it away and look to  repair it(haven’t yet told me a price)


At this stage I don’t know what to do, after the second garage I didn’t want to replace the full ECU kit,  because I couldn’t find a kit that had everything I needed(always something missing). Hence why I took it to a third place.

I was curious, do I really need a full ECU kit or why can’t I just change the ECU itself or does anyone know any ECU experts for VW?

If someone can give me any information or any clue or even a past experience I would greatly appreciate that:)

There are a few options:

1) Get a used ECU from ebay.  A lot of sellers specialise in immobiliser removal, which makes it plug-n-play. No need for keys, clocks, coding etc.  They do charge a big premium for that though. Used ECUs are worth around £100 untouched, but with the security removed, they charge up to 3 or 4 times that.

2) Buy an untouched used ECU and send it off to a specialist to copy your ECU details over to the used one, but your car may need to be present, or send them both ECUs.

3) Buy a brand new 'virgin' ECU from VW and have them download the immbobiliser and VIN to it.

Options 1 and 2 will mean the car is no longer immobilised.

Option 3 will be like nothing ever happened.....but wil cost you well over £1000.

People think Apple are bad for serialising easily replaceable components to the logic board...... VAG beat them to it by decades!
