MK5 GTI Pioneer Headunit + Gladen Audio Upgrade
« on: April 09, 2022, 12:58:40 pm »
Hey Folks, have been trawling through past threads about OEM headhunt replacement for my 06 Mk5. Has anyone fitted a Pioneer SPH-DA120? Are there any issues with power drain? also I am considering the Gladen Audio ONE LINE 200 3 piece speaker upgrade and want to make sure they will talk to each other. Again if anyone has experience with either of these I would appreciate a steer in the right direction.

Many thanks

Ive got the gladen 3 ways, amp and sub. Sounds pretty decent and im happy with them although ive been thinking about adding a separate amp just for the sub.

I have a kenwood 518vdabs.

Any reason you dont want to add an amp?

AH nice, thanks for the reply. To be honest I didn't think these were active speakers and thought they just shoot into the same spots as the OEM speakers and plug Into the back of the Headunit.

How do you find that Headunit? Was there any battery drain issues?

best,

J

I personally wanted something that was OEM looking and really happy with this HU. It makes the car feel more modern when compared to the old factory unit. No battery drain issues at all. I bought the HU 2nd hand from someone that had it in a Caddy so it came with the correct harness for VW and was therefore a very simple plug and play.  I wouldn't spend the £900 or so they go for new but at £450 it was a better option to me than a lower spec brand new unit. Its got all the features I could possibly need, the iPhone works seamlessly and I've bought a Kenwood dashcam which was again a very easy plug and play.

I`m sure there are equally good units out there but I can`t complain about this one.

I have the Gladen speakers.  Running off a Sony HU and Kenwood amp.  Also have a powered sub.

To be frank, I was disappointed with the Gladen speakers.  They appear to be cheaply made - quite lightweight, baskets are pressed steel, magnets are small.  If I was doing it again I wouldn't buy them.  Seems to me that they are an old design being sold for premium money.   Also mine were not plug and play - I had to mess about with the wiring to get them to work.

In terms of sound quality - I find them a bit harsh.  Bass is there, but as I've got a sub, I have crossed them over to not deal with sub bass.  Imaging is poor, but that may be the design of the car and where the speakers are located.
