anyone test driven a mk7 golf R
« on: April 14, 2022, 06:32:04 pm »
as above has anyone driven a mk7 golf r modded or stock?
thinking of a possible change when insurance is up in a couple of months but have yet to test one,  im guessing with the same stage of tune it will be light years ahead in every way, but it would be nice to hear from someone that has driven one compared to their mk5

I've driven a stage 2 Mk5 and a stage 1 Mk7 Gti. Honestly, the stock R feels better than the Mk5 as I was pretty disappointed with the stage 2 Mk5 because it just felt slow.

The stage 1 Mk7 was more impressive it pulled hard and was more immediate in it's power delivery than the R and didn't have the sudden turbo surge like you get with the stock R.

Yeah driven a stock DSG one.

Likes: Build quality (compared to MK5, but not as good as equivalent Audi), variable ratio rack, refinement, ride comfort, brakes and midrange grunt.

Dislikes: Infotainment system, numb steering (less feedback than MK5), gearbox and cost cutting (plastic sump, 5 door only, limited choice of colours, pressed steel instead of alloy etc etc).

They can be improved upon, plenty of potential, especially with a Turbo Technics upgrade, but as standard I wasn't blown away.  Might make a good project car when they drop into the £15Ks.

Yeah I think I'd prefer the TCR or Clubsport over the R. Better still, the Clubsport S but not at that money, if you can get one!  Where I live, 4WD would just be excess baggage 90% of the time. I don't do launches (I'm nearly 50  ) or snow driving.

i am aware that they are not especially fast when stock, compared with a stage 2 mk5 gti with over 20ft lbs more torque and 150kg lighter, but when lowered and mapped different story by all accounts, my mistake i should have said i was really looking for differences like for like, pointless having anymore power in the gti as get wheel spin even in 3rd,and they are fun cars just not fast cars, if i was to try and put some descent power in it with a k04 or hybrid then even with a lsd you will still be losing grip until 4th, heard same thing from mk7 gti guys even the ones with the pp and lsd say it makes little difference when you are running near 400 ft lbs of torque, must try and get a test drive in a lowered and tuned one to see for myself, thanks all

I had a 67 plate 7.5R DSG before my Ed30. I never really took to it and I'd buy the GTI over a R every time.

Stock, been in a couple of stage 1 R and they just don't do anything for me. They are quick but not what you'd expect from 380 bhp, the AWD saps a fair bit of power. I wouldn't remap on a stock turbo anyway, would always be nervous of it failing. If 0-60 is your thing you'll love an R but if 40 onwards is your thing then you might be disappointed.

Has anybody driven a manual 7R?

The only issue is that they seem to need a clutch as soon as you tune, which is less of an issue on a K03 MK5.

My sister has a 1.5 (I think?) DSG 7.5 and I think it is great for a non performance car.

dont they use haldex which only drives rear when front slip meaning when you have traction its still front wheel only?

Its more full time 4wd now, 90% FWD and 10% sent to the rear, according to this link:
https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/technology/transmissions-and-drivetrains/4motion.html

Not sure what Pudding was saying about only available in 4 door - unless referring to GTE or newer Mk8 - personally I covet a 3 door in this spec - but agree 4WD would be excessive:

The prop shaft is always spinning, the Haldex at the rear engages it when needed. To give you some idea my 300 bhp Ed30 pulls a decent gap on a 300 bhp R.
