lucas octane booster just as worthless as the rest
« on: April 17, 2022, 10:49:38 am »
tryed another brand of octane booster yesterday in the hopes of getting my 97 upto 99 or higher, already tryed millers eco plus, nf race formula, all of which only had a negative effect, so as a last effort i tryed lucas 3x boost,
seems it does the same as the rest in that it just reduces performance and mpg, seems all these products are just what many others have called snake oil...  maybe in race engines that are tuned specifically for the stuff might make a difference, but the claim that they boost octane giving more performance is clearly lies...
going from 95 - 97  you instantly feel the difference so upping that buy the same amount or even greater should show the same result not the opposite,    gets me thinking about all these boy racers that claim it makes their car faster is all in their heads...
will be sticking to 97 from now on

If you're in UK why not just fill up with Shell V Power or Tesco 99?

I think he's in Ireland and they don't have 99 RON over there, as far as I'm aware.

Maybe try meth injection instead.

I live in Ireland and my car lives on Millers Power Plus Ecomax 500ml, which you can buy from Halfords for €17.10, and sometimes there's a 10% discount on top of that too.

It's a multishot bottle so I usually add 75ml to raise the octane from 95 to 98, or if I feeling adventurous I'll put in 100ml to raise it to 99.

Of course I have no way of proving the octane is actually raised, nor power increased, and I can't compare to 95 octane as I've always ran the car on the octane booster. But I do get the same MPGs as everyone else on the forum running on their UK premium octanes (sometimes even above 40mpg if driving carefully on countryside roads).

I read the difference between 95 and 98 octane on our engines is ~15hp, so 7.5% in horsepower (and a couple mpg) for an extra €2.5-3 per tank is worth it to me.

thanks for all the replies, yes in ni we only have 97,   eco max millers was the first one i tryed first at 1 shot then 2 , the more i added the worse it performed, same goes for nf race formula, tryed half bottle first then half bottle on half tank so full dosage, again got worse the more i added, recently replaced a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor so i thought i would try another just incase that was hampering the effect so tryed lucas as full dosage, same result as on the others, i remember fifth gear testing all these products and finding the same results so i guess they were right,
but going from 95 - 97 is the complete reverse you instantly feel the difference so thats full gone clusion for me,
for anyone thats putting these things in your fuel without custom tuning for it i would suggest trying a tank of normal super to see the difference,

I bought a bottle of Lucas Octane Booster ages ago and it has been sitting in my garage. I’m in England so do fill up with either Momentum or Vpower.

Bought during the fuel shortages last year, a bit disappointed to hear it doesn’t impress. I may drop it in during the peak of summer.

it would be great for someone who uses 99 to then do back to back tests to see how it compares to my experience, if you decide to i suggest working out the max dosage and dividing it down to say 10 litres worth so if your as disappointed as me you havent ruined a whole tank,

have heard tuolene mentioned as a better octane booster, think from memory it was around 112 octane which is 17 octane higher than unleaded, cant be think that means you would need so around 5 litres would boost it by around 2 numbers on a 50 litre tank,
cant be bothered not that important just a bit of a let down all these octane boosters

thanks for all the replies, yes in ni we only have 97...

Correct me if I'm wrong (as I don't live in NI), but supposedly Hughes Nisa Extra Camlough in Newry sells 'Super Unleaded 99 Octane', as per one of their Facebook posts. If you look on streetview, one of the 4 pumps does indeed say 'Super Unleaded 99 Octane'.

I only heard about it after coming back from my adventures in the north so I never actually got to try it, which is a shame.
