A/C Advice.
« on: April 23, 2022, 05:53:03 pm »
So the A/C stopped blowing cold on my 2008 Edition 30 last week, checked the basics such as fuses and fans running ok, no codes showing using vcds.
Had a mobile air con guy around today just to check gas level and it was low so extracted and did a vac system test and it held well.
Re gassed but still not working but system is trying to kick into life as he said the pressure on the gauge was showing this.
He was sure it’s pointing to the solenoid in the compressor so I’m wondering where to go next with this as I want to sell the car, some people so far have been put off by the fact it’s not working.
I was thinking of throwing a solenoid at it or maybe even biting the bullet and getting a compressor which I can fit myself.
I am going to check if the voltage is reaching the solenoid first and go from there, I know these systems can be a nightmare once they start playing up.
Any advice if you have had similar problems and how it ended up?

It could be the pressure switch that’s knackered. It’s about 60quid from the dealer. Start with the cheap stuff first.

I think that stops the system working according to him or at least throws up a code.

I think that’s correct. So are you saying the compressor does run?

Yes it’s running but it’s not a conventional clutch type one so it’s running all the time, the solenoid governs the demand so to speak.

I think given the air con is dodgy on Mk5 Golf’s anyway, I’d wouldn’t worry about it and just sell the car.
Getting too old for this...

As Josh said.

I've spent way too much money trying to fix mine for it to not work again. Even the Air Con specialist I had repair it once said don't bother! :signLOL:

I might throw a solenoid in the compressor and get it gassed up as he won’t charge if it doesn’t work, will leave it alone after that as they seem to be plagued with issues.
I’ve just watched Ed china doing his transporter a/c on you tube and what a mare he’s having!

It's tempting to remove the whole lot when it fails to shift a good amount of kilos off the front end, and open up the intercoolers air path!

Nobody is going to spend £1000s fixing A/C on a 15 year old car, and even when it does work, it's extremely lame by current standards.
