been on hols left care in valet parked secure site mileage on arrival 0n trip 167.7 mileage on return 166.00 hows that??

Marty McFly brought it back a few minutes early?

The clocks and engine ECU both record distance covered.  Maybe there is a delay in them conferring with each other and updating?  Engine ECU is KMs only, so will need converting to miles for UK/US cars.  Not sure. Ask on a different MK7 forum as this one isn't heavy with MK7 users or content.

Has the total mileage changed?  Is say they've been using it and then got the trip back to 166.

trip could have been reset and driven back up to 166 miles.   did you get the actual mileage reading?

Yep. Check the mileage in the engine ECU.  If that has gone up 166 miles, then the above is correct!  Foul play!
