GTi stripe paint
« on: July 24, 2022, 09:55:15 pm »
Needing to repaint the red stripe on my mk5 GTi as previous owner painted it black to cover over the lacquer peel which affects these cars.

Found this which they sell a full set but also thought if I just get some from halfords.

I don't need it to be show quality but something decent would be good, any recommendations?

Are you talking about the red stripe that goes round the front grill?

If so it is red plastic.....sand off the black paint working up the grades for a smooth finish and lacquer

Okay I might not have sanded it enough, I have gone through the paint and into the primer. Will sand some more and see what it looks like.

Any advice on a good lacquer?

I think it's actually white/grey plastic underneath iirc.  I repainted mine a few years back as it had faded/chipped/peeled.  Tornado red is indeed the correct colour  :happy2:

I just got it from Halfords mate.  It's a standard colour in their ready mixed rack  :happy2:

Painting has begun. Bought it from halfords and the colour is nice and goes on well. Got a nib so need to do a little rubbing down and apply again before lacquer.

Yeah the Halfords stuff goes on well and lasts. I did it 5 years ago and it's still looking great today  :happy2:  Also did the honeycomb shatness that goes grey with Plastikote Satin black at the same time.
