Do you need to replace the bolts on both when replacing?

Not really. Every couple of changes I tend to but mostly just for the sake of it. Not  a necessity if they seem to be in good condition. They're not like the stretch bolts holding the subframe to the chassis that are a little risky if re used multiple times.

Yeah don't bother.  The online kits imply you need to replace them (and the O ring), but you don't. It's a money making scheme.  They buy the bolts and rings in at wholesale prices and sell them to you at full rrp. It's a scam.

I tend to be cautious about bolts with unknown history, new to me car - I replaced my HPFP bolts when I rebuilt my head - but next time I am in there I will change those to studs

I was going to ask if anyone has done the stud conversion?
Is it worth it,  any negatives apart from the price? 😂

Seems like a good idea as it reduces the chance of stripping or crossing threading the threads in the chain cover.

Only thing I'm wondering now, having only changed it only once myself, is that being dsg, I couldn't get tdc so there wasn't much clearance from the part in front, guessing cos it was nowhere near tdc?
