Getting VW parts shouldn't be this difficult!!
« on: January 11, 2023, 10:33:39 pm »
Time for a rant...

Over the last few years I've been purchasing parts for our Mk5 GTI from many sources online such as ECP, CP4L, Autodoc, eBay... etc. Always buy genuine or better but I've always had the luxury of time.

Car broke down on Friday at wife's workplace, RAC diagnosed a faulty ignition switch and said they need to tow it. Had it towed home the following day and I tried to purchase a new ignition switch and relay as that can also be the cause of the issue.

I called my local dealer Saturday morning, they didn't hold either part in stock nor did any of the other branches in the franchise so would have to order it for next working day Monday. But they wouldn't order it without payment in person but I couldn't get down to them before 1pm when they close, then he had the cheek to say they don't take cash, card only... So why can't you take my card details over the phone? <banging head against wall>

Calles TPS, I know I know they no longer supply to the general public. I gave my friendly mechanics details and they said they have both in stock, great can I pick it up? No, we can only courier it out on Saturdays to his garage, but he's not open on Saturdays. Otherwise I have to make an appointment on Monday and only he can pick it up. An appointment?! These are car parts, not an MRI scan. Arghhhhhh, it shouldn't be this difficult to buy parts.

I needed to get the car on the road for Monday but it just wasn't happening. I ordered from the dealer Monday morning and it arrived today, Wednesday.

Parts fitted, it was the relay and not the ignition switch but I had broken the old switch getting it out, and all is well.

What a faff it's all been, I miss the old days of walking into a motor factor, the dealer or even TPS and parts would be there, I pay and I take them home and fit or have fitted. I don't know why VW make it this difficult.

End of rant.

Love a good rant  :happy2:

I can actually see buying direct from the manufacturer becoming a thing, because dealers are an expensive middle man no one wants or needs.

On top of what you've already mentioned, it's just their attitude and apathy towards customers.  And it's not just VW, but most German brands! Walk into any new to you dealer, and the sheer level of ignoring and disinterest is simply staggering. Worse still, the parts desks have all be removed, so you have to ask..... if you can actually get one of the people pretending to be busy at their desk's attention.  It's pretty clear all they care about is new car sales, and even then you have to fit their preferred customer profile for them to bother their lazy arses with you.

To me, the whole future car landscape just feels like it's on the verge of being completely f'cked anyway   Mainly because of the overhyped and rushed transition to EV cars.

All this big push to go EV by 2030 means charging stations need to be installed at a rate of 500 per day to meet the proposed numbers, and where's all that electricity going to come from?  Only 1 new Nuclear station on the horizon in the UK, and that will take 10 years to build.  We'll need at least another 5 or 6, minimum, to support the massive demand on the National Grid. And who is going to pay for building and maintaining the charging infrastructure? Tax payers? The same tax payers who only wish they could afford a £50K+ Tesla, or a £100K+ Taycan etc.  Yeah I know there are Nissan Leaf and Prius grade sh1t boxes, but no one wants that crap

Meanwhile, ICE cars are continuing to be churned out in their 100s of 1000s. What will happen to all those when EVs are mandated?  And parts supply is an issue on them already, let alone in another 7-10 years!

Baaaaaah, it's all shat.  Keep your old cars people  :happy2:

The next part of the rub will be how much of the item you’ll need to buy, instead of the component part  - meaning you want a door part you have to buy a whole door instead of a latch or trim piece etc crazy days ahead.

[rant]VWs been doing it for ~18 years now. I had the scratched up dsg surround trim, the rubbery stuff they use, and wanted to get a new one. Shouldn't have costed more then 20$ I presumed... turned out they don't even sell the damned thing by itself (even though it's easy to remove) and you have to buy the whole shebang.... leather, trim, golf ball shifter... all for the amazing price of 580 euros. They must be smoking crack up there. I ended up buying a can of Plastidip for 6$ and did it myself, looks brand new.

I looked at one of those "intermediary" mufflers since the previous owner decided to put straight pipes leaving only the final stock muffler.. it was unbearable. What did vw charge for the middle resonator intermediary muffler? ~1100 eur, I bought the same from a local breaker for 35$.

They are totally nuts with the spare parts OEM prices. It's like they forgot the god damned rust bucket (have lovely sills on mine, just had the TDI redone and now I have to do the whole thing again on the ED30), arabian nights headliner falling on ones head thing they made was built 18 years ago.

Ive had similar from my dealer when I've gone in.  I now email them and find the service much better, as I just pop in to pick it up when ready.

I once went into Audi to buy a part for my Golf, which nearly melted the brain of the guy I was dealing with, he kept asking if I was sure I wanted a Audi part!

Yeah that will definitely come, although its partly here already with engine, wiring harness and module diagnosis. They just replace the whole thing instead of repairing it, which is incredibly wasteful and irresponsible in terms of landfill and right to repair  :stupid:

Although weirdly, the Germans won't sell you a complete seat, only parts of it. The one thing in any car interior that wears out significantly and causes discomfort......nope.....you can't have a new one sir.  You have to rebuild your existing one at huge expense :stupid:

Classic case of customers knowing more than the dealer

I actually had one Audi dealer refuse to sell me a set of red coils because "They're not for a VW engine"  :stupid:

Spot on the lot of you.

In the good old days, the parts department would have it's own entrance round the back, there would be a queue to speak to the man in the hole in the window. You'll speak to him, he'll check his computer and then go round the back and pick it up from one of the many racks upon racks of stock. Then you ask for a discount and he'll normally oblige with 10%. Now the parts department is reduced to a desk with a pen.

And you're right, there will be no customers but they're all busy entering details of the next PCP contract they've got someone to sign, kerrr-chink.

My favourite one... the charge for diagnostis. You mean plug it into a computer and press enter?

And manufactures are all hell bent on putting everything on a touchscreen, I can't think of anything more dangerous. Having to take your eye off the road to turn the demister on. You know where you are with a knob. I can see relatively new cars (less than 10 years in my definition) in the near future being written off as these screens develop faults and everything stops working. Think mobile phones, throwaway tech.

I have a friend who had a very high spec BMW 340i. It had a little frontend shunt, no airbags deployed but it was written off as it had these all singing and dancing headlights. I think each was £2k!

I must be getting old.

Feel your pain.  I rang 5 dealers this week to try and get a price for a DSG service. 3 Didn't even answer the phone?! One said they would call back and never did and another did give me a quote (£315 which i thought was a bit pricey).

Saying that the 3 specialists i rang weren't much better, one no answer, another said they would call back but didn't and the third did give me a price of £270.

I'll see your rant, and raise you a mega rant

Yeah I remember those days well, and miss them.  It was nice to build a relationship with a dealer and they automatically discount, and get your car up on ETKA ready when they see you walk in, great times

It's all about image now. Shiny new cars parked on pristine white tiles, expensive pot plants dotted around the place, soft seating areas, accessory brochures neatly laid out on breakfast bars and coffee tables, free tea and coffee machines etc etc......all socially engineered to disguise the fact that cars are machines, and therefore require expensive maintenance and parts. It's almost like they're trying to sell you a designer kitchen rather than a car.  And that's why hid the parts desks and workshops away, because it doesn't fit within the image they're trying to portray.  No one needs to see the dirty oily bits.

They totally play on the emotions of presentation and showroom aesthetics. They know that people are more easily parted with their money in the right setting, vs a grubby old back street used car dealer. It's like the old trick of putting a pot of coffee on and lighting an open fire when selling a house.

So now you have to ask to speak to parts. 5 minutes later a bored looking bloke comes out with a pen and notepad, ffs   He then disappears for another 5-10 minutes and comes back with the inevitable answers of not in stock, or he couldn't find the part on his system   It was so much easier when they had a desk and could spin the screen around to show you the ETKA diagrams.

My local parts guys hate what dealerships have become.  They don't like the politics, the fakeness and being hidden away from customers like a dirty secret.

My local BMW still has a parts desk at the back of the building, so at least I don't have to deal with the showroom people.

You can always get the measure of a dealer the second you walk in.  If the receptionist (if there even is one) immediately looks down at his/her instagram screen and ignores you, that is a sign of whats to come, and a measure of their attitude towards customers.  They are front of house.  Front of house's job is to greet clients, not ignore them.

Grrrrr, that sh1t really bugs me.  People are potentially walking in there to hand them a £50K cheque for a car, but they look at you like you're a tramp.  Or maybe it's just me and I unknowingly bring that out in people   I've been fortunate enough to have travelled a lot, and I have to say, the UK is among the worst for customer service in the world, if not THE worst. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect the red carpet to be rolled out, but there's a minimum level of service we deserve and expect.

Grrrrrr.

Yeah the diagnostics charge is mental. £100+ just to plug in the laptop. Thank god for VAG-COM and VCDS eh? They must really resent customers doing their own diagnostics and repairs   Probably why they ask for a reg or VIN number to try and dissuade you from going in there with part numbers.  You're doing all that leg work for them, which is less cash in their pocket.

Yeah those screens are a big distraction. When it comes to driving, all the controls need to be instant, tactile and easy to reach without taking your eyes off the road. No one wants to piss about in menus trying put the heated seats on or change radio station.  It's all a joke really.  The one thing computers don't like is extremes of temperature and moisture, and they are exactly what you get in cars, so complex modules and screens are destined to fail, but they don't care because 90% of new car purchases are rental/leases, so they know you'll be in a new one in 2-3 years.  F'ck the planet and the growing e-waste problem.

You're not wrong about BMWs, Mercs, Audis etc and their cost of repair.  Those adaptive laser headlights that follow the road some BMWs have, cost £5K each! Even the 'basic' non adapative LED lights are £1.5K each. Absolutely insane. They don't cost anywhere near that much to BMW at the factory obviously, so it's all a scam to force you to buy a new car.  It's just so ecologically irresponsible. I don't know why they are allowed to get away with it.
A modern car can last 20 years easily, certainly the body shell can, so it's just so wasteful and unnecessary.  Some people do actually like what they've got and want to keep it.  Imagine if we were forced into buying a new couch every 2 years because the material deliberately crumbles to pieces.

Anyway, I'll stop there before I bore even myself to tears

A lot of the issues are companies can only see what they can see on their computer system + it doesn't help that VW are not interested in anything over 10 years old

I replaced my ignition switch last year - my understanding is this is the same part for all Mk5's
probably fitted to millions of VAG group cars.
I went for a Topran switch off ebay for £11.50, surprisingly easy to replace.
