Sportec ko4 turbo
« on: January 12, 2023, 07:22:27 pm »
So I’ve just got my turbo off as I was planning a ko4 but to my surprise it’s already got one! Myself and the last owner of the car believed it was ko3 with all supporting mods, seemed a lot quicker though. Makes sense now! It’s a sportec turbo which I believe would’ve been very expensive, if anyone has any info on sportec turbos or AMD tuning as my number plate is VW54AMD I believe they maybe supplied the turbo years ago.

Nice  :happy2:

I have heard of Sportec, but didn't realise they are Swedish, so the expertise and quality is there  :happy2: https://sportec.ch/en

Didn't know they did mods for the EA113 engine either!  They're were more known for their 911s back in the day.

AMD had a shady reputation at one point but I think they've recovered from that now - https://www.amdtuning.com/   Well, they made a pigs ear of a map on one of my project cars, and also my mate's MK4 1.8T.  Both had to be taken elsewhere for a proper map afterwards.

Brilliant discovery. Get it on some rollers to see how much power is making!

Yeah so it’s definitely a pretty old turbo because I don’t think sportec have done anything with these engines lately and I’ve never seen one for sale, I’m planning getting it sent away to get a once over, maybe get a hybrid core. Now there’s one thing that’s confusing me about the setup, it doesn’t have a dv recirc pipe from the intake pipe but has the dv on the turbo itself, I always thought you had to relocate it for a ko4.
Cheers for the replies

The DV mounting is still there on K04 turbos, but blanked off.  Not sure why Borg Warner did that but it forced VAG into remote locating the DV.  Maybe Sportec drilled the housing to accept the DV, or it's just a K03 hybrid of some sort.

Yeah makes sense I always thought it was a ko3 because of where the DV is located, hopefully I can get it reconditioned and make some good power, Cheers for the reply.

iirc APR and one or two other engineering companies in the US supplied  a k04 turbo that didn't require dv repositioning because the turbo housing was drilled to accommodate it and used the same k03 pipework.
Without traction power is nothing!
