Engine oil overfill
« on: January 07, 2023, 05:56:05 pm »
Hi all

Bit of a school boy error but I have overfilled my 2005 gti.

I’ve attached an image to show where the oil level is now and one with the cleaned dip stick for reference

Can I get away with the oil at this level?

Thanks

I’ve done that before and that’s over 1 litre overfilled. If you have an oil extractor, suck some out, otherwise just let the engine burn it off.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don’t have an extractor and happy to let the engine burn the oil off. Just wanted to make sure I’m not doing any damage to the engine by taking that approach?

You could let some out of the sump plug, would be messy though.

I vote for this option, if it's easy enough for you to do.

There's a possibility (although unlikely) that low oil pressure could be caused from over-filling the oil, causing engine damage.

If a little flashing scary red oil light appears on your dash, then it's definitely time to correct the oil level.

Thanks for all the relies on this. I ended up taking it to a garage I’ve used for many years and they drained enough oil to bring the level back down to ‘max’

No charge either   :happy2:
